New processors!?

I haven't upgraded in a while, and my system is like this:

Epox 8RDA+
2100+ @ 11.5x200
512mb TwinMOS pc3700
9800pro @ 425/340

I was looking back at the mobile chips everyone was excited about a while ago, but not sure if they are really worth it to me.

Specifically the 2400+ 35w:

I figure it will go to 2.6 or 2.7 from my 2.3 and it has the bigger cache. Worth 90 bucks?

Obviously 64's are big now, but I don't know how much of a difference it makes to spend on a new board/processor/heatsink and go with a new 64. Can anyone enlighten me on real speed differences?

I doubt 300 MHz would make much of a difference; I've currently got a mobile running at 2.3, and it suits me fine. It'll do 2.4-2.5, but I'd rather not pump the 1.8 volts it needs; if I were you, I'd save up for a 64. There is a huge difference - look at some AT reviews.

I actually could afford a full Athlon 64 setup. It's just a matter of what difference does it make. I'm having a hell of a time finding bencmarks between them, but I'm looking.

athalon64 2800+(the cheapest) outperforms the 3200+xp or 3100+ sempron.THG had a cpu showdown a few weeks ago.

I would be looking at a 3000+ and neo2 or something like that. You say it outperforms the 3200+, but my computer already outperforms a 3200+ and my processor was 90 bucks like two years ago.

The 3000+ A64 (90nm Winchester) is probably the best CPU you could buy for cheap OCing potential. I know several friends who have them running at a variety of speeds from 2.4GHz to 2.6GHz on air. I don't know what would be possible using water (If anyone does know that would be great), but on air it is one of the best around. However, for the extra £100, a 3500+ has a little more potential I believe, and requires less voltage.

Those OCs are using the nForce3 Ultra based MSI K8N Neo2 and OCZ Platinum Rev2 DDR400, with various coolers.

A64 is worth it now, and in the future. with windows 64 supposedly offering large performance increases over its 32bit counterpart, itll be good to be 'futureproof'
