no, my GTX 970 barely gets 30fps in some games on ultra settings. Certainly I could lower them but that defeats the main purpose of gaming on a PC. On console the developers will actually base game designs to achieve the most optimal look where on PC they would just slap whatever they want in the game and let it be your problem.
Besides that's not the mentality that the typical console gamer carries, they want a small box and streamlined experience where everything is guaranteed to work with the included controller and the millennia's base a lot of their gaming decisions on what all their friends are using so they can play online together. I work with a few of them and they don't seem to care about top shelf graphics or mods at all and it's one of many reasons why consoles keep selling.

For me, the main purpose(s) of gaming on a pc are in this order: Ability to natively use a mouse and keyboard, modability, hackability, and lastly, increased framerate and graphics.

A quick poll of gamers in the office show that the first two purposes i listed are the same with most of us. Higher framerates and graphics are down on the list and not as important.

Is Playstation VR going to work with the current PS4, or do I have to buy a PS4.5 to use Playstation VR?

I'm not sure if someone already said this but...

I doubt that the "PS4.5" will have increased gaming performance vs the current PS4. It's been in the wind for a LONG time, that the HDMI port on the PS4 was a design flaw... in the fact that it can't support UHD content. Sony has been discussing business with companies like Netflix for quite some time now, since actually right around when the PS4 first launched, and I never understood how they were going to do 4K streaming video on a PS4 without some hardware modifications. Sony's also not just videogames, they're heavily tied into bluray and TVs as well, so a PS4 that can't play UHD bluray disks is a problem for them.

The need for the update is UHD streaming and video content, not gaming....

Gahh and I upgraded my PS4 two months ago with a 1TB SSHD. Good thing I still have the original 500GB drive. I'm sure Gamestop or other gaming stores would have some type of trade in deal, well at least they better.

If the "Trade in an Xbox 1 and get $200 off the sale of an Xbox One" deal is any indication, you absolutely will.

Of course this means you will also need to get a 4k TV if you don't have one currently. I don't have one or care for one but would be interested in the new system if they have a trade in deal.

For Sony VR, they'd benefit from coming out with new motion controllers as this review indicate the Move controller hurts the experience: http://www.gizmag.com/best-vr-headset-gdc-2016/42377/

PS Move controllers came out in 2010, surely they can update it with a new better model.

Thanks for the link, that's interesting reading.

I think I'm going to pass on PSVR - I was seriously thinking about getting one this Fall.

ill be shocked if PSVR's aren't all over best buys and gamestops before release so you most likely can try before you buy.

I find it odd how not one company thought to make gloves to emulate hand movement, especially Vive with the room-scale.

Of course, PS4 trades have been horrendous thus far. When was the last time there was a trade up deal for it, or even a good sale?

Well, when my friend bought his son a PS4 around christmas he got two games with it which wasn't horrible. They've had numerous trade-in deals toward the PS4 same as the XB1 at gamestop. So it's not like there was nothing at all.

There hasn't been a PS4 trade deal in some time. I mean, GameStop's run the $200 TiV ones, but not the ones where you trade a PS3 or 360 for a PS4. Microsoft is currently doing $50 off all XB1 consoles, and GameStop's throwing $100 for any slim PS3/360 on top, and they've also done a free digital game on top of it for a while (though it might be over now).

2 free games is almost the entry point of an XB1 purchase anymore. That's the rare "deal" for a PS4. Right now, all you can do is get a $350 PS4 with Black Ops 3.

Sometime early last year I traded in my ps3 for $100 plus a $50 coupon towards an Xbox one bundle. With the controllers I made out pretty good, I think I paid $180 for the brand new Xbox with the assassins Creed bundle. Then I sold that code too.

I sure hope that they would have a trade in value of at least $150 for a ps4 since this new console will be out probably November 2016. At least if I want to get the new one I'll also probably need to get a 4k TV down the road. But then again I wouldn't be a first adopter..I want to wait and see the actual differences.

It's no secret that MS has desperately tried to gain sales numbers.

i still don't think this is legit at all. i mean technology is just seems "impossible".

i mean ps4 and x1 can't even do 1080p at 60fps consistently. that alone makes me LOL at the thought of a console coming out 3 years or whatever later doing 4k @ 60fps, that is only an "upgrade" to the current console.

it just does not seem technically feasible. let alone in a little ass ps4 case.

its not

600$ GPUs struggle to run games at 4k60 on even medium settings

sure there are coding advantages for consoles and optimizations to be made but take the new tomb raider or the Division, top end card struggle to maintain 60 FPS even on medium settings at 4k. and theres no way they are getting a 980 TI or R9 into a PS4, the heat dissipation needed alone would make it impossible in a console

I don't see consoles hitting resolutions higher than 1080p without fancy upscaling techniques. Like with Killzone Shadowfall, they used a temporal upscale in the multiplayer... which was actually pretty good quality. I would anticipate that similar upscaling techniques will be used heavily in future consoles to achieve 4k output, vs actually trying to render at that resolution (which won't be possible under a console transistor budget). Good upscaling, combined with AA, should be able to get the job done respectably, IMHO... to the point of heavy diminishing returns on pushing for bigger GPUs.

The PS4.5 won't do that though. That's Playstation 5 stuff. The little update here is just likely to have an updated HDMI and some other minor hardware updates for 4K streaming video and bluray movies. Sony is just releasing their new 4K video streaming service, and has various other UHD content partnerships that would benefit from an updated PS4.

That's the old model. The G6 is is $8000 for a 65" screen. That's the 2016 model.

HDR is never worse than SDR. That's absurd. It's not a buzzword or some hack to sell TVs, it's a real benefit and it's an immediately obvious one when you experience it. Especially if you can do a side by side or A/B test of SDR vs HDR. I can hardly watch SDR content anymore because the colors are so muted and the whole picture seems a bit washed out with much less shadow detail. It's that much of a difference that when I go back to watch a 1080p Blu-Ray I think it looks kind of bad.

HDR is suppose to be muted. In fact, HDR (High Dynamic Range) literally means in a given scene, you'll have detail in your highlights and your shadow areas, where as SDR, your highlights will be blown out and your shadows will be black. Less stops in a given scene. But what people have done with HDR is they saturate the hell out of the scene, give it a "tonal contrast" or a high pass filter, then they giving you a shit load of colors and wham: you get what people call "HDR" though technically it's HDR with Post Processing features. In a LDR, You have a high contrast scene in which you still can shoot a High Pass Filter, Add saturation -- which will give it the modern HDR term look.

HRD is not inherently bad, the human eye is HDR, its pretty damn amazing TBH

the issue is people who do HDR photo/vid push it past the point of it being normal and over saturate and sharpen everything which makes it look like shit

before "HDR" became a buzzword pretty much every landscape photo you have seen is technically an HDR through the use of a neutral density filter and a polarizer

Ansel Adams zone system is the analog version of it
