I've been married to my wife for 21+ years. Getting a new puppy to replace our Border Collie who we had to put down in July was probably the biggest divide over an issue we've had that entire time. Seriously.

I am 110% firmly in the camp about adopting dogs from pounds/rescues as there are so many out there that need homes. I've never had a dog/cat that wasn't adopted this way (our other dog was adopted from an animal shelter). My wife absolutely decided she wanted a (way too much $$$) Australian Sheppard (Merle colored), and there wasn't/isn't any of that particular dog available outside of dedicated Australian Sheppard breeders. The breeder does seem like a good breeder with years and years of glowing reviews and not the irresponsible "puppy mill" kind.

I fought the good fight for a month and half trying to get her to change her mind, but of course "happy wife, happy life" prevailed as she would not budge on her decision AT ALL. We usually can "meet in the middle" on almost every other decision we have ever faced, but not this time. Honestly, it almost felt like we were debating/arguing politics with our unwillingness to alter our stances at all.

So in three weeks, we get to drive 3 hours (6 hours roundtrip) to pick up the new puppy. The video quality isn't the best since it was sent by text message and compressed all to hell, but here's a video the breeder sent my wife this evening of our new dog.

Once we get it, I'll post some better pics/video of him.

Beautiful pup.

I just got a pup myself 3 weeks ago. It's 11 weeks old.

Be prepared for no sleep, having to take out the pup every 2-3 hrs. Also the land shark will shred your fingers and legs/ankles for a good while. You'll will feel desperation at times. . Good Luck!

Yeah, puppies are cute but they are a lot of work.

Our old dog was really smart and could be trained to do just about anything (we even taught him to put his toys up), he always had to have a lot of physical/mental stimulation in his first year or he'd get bored (and destructive).

Our current dog, a hound mix, isn't........let's just say.....the sharpest knife in the drawer.

She's the classic stubborn hound, afraid of just about anything new, and was a major PIA house training her. Once she "got it", she hasn't had an accident in over 2 years, but she really tested my patience. She's learned to sit at the door when she wants out, shake, sit, and halfway roll over, but I fear that's about as far as she will ever get, but she loves to cuddle with me and be around me at all times, and ever since I had my back surgery I'm not as active as I once was.

We got two miniature poodles this year. They still aren't housebroken. Tons of work dealing with them, but it's also fun. Occasionally, both will want to sleep in my lap when I'm on a couch or recliner....great stress relief.

We're also in the "new puppy club."

We had to put down our two very senior dogs in July. 15 and 17 1/2...both little rat dogs. (6 lbs and 12 lbs.)

We got an 8 week old labradoodle from a local lady. Fuck me. He was 16 lbs when we got him not quite 2 weeks ago...he's pushing 20 lbs now. He's gonna be a monster.

There is NO way I would take a dog, any dog, from anywhere (or any other fur pet) without spending time with it in person. Unseen? Video? Nope.

That dog looks way too serious (like he's plotting against you in some way).

Congratulations!

Thanks. 10 weeks old tomorrow...getting almost totally potty trained. He has the rare "accident" every couple of days.

That pic was taken right after we brought him home. First time away from his momma...and we were the only people other than the breeder and vet he's ever "met." He was a bit apprehensive.

He is a bit...serious...most of the time...until he goes into crazy dog mode, usually around 10 pm. Then it's all running around, teeth flashing, nipping, biting playfully and out of control. That lasts 30-60 minutes...then he crashes hard and is quiet the rest of the night.
I'll be glad when he gets through the puppy teething period...in about 3-4 months.

Figuring out (and agreeing) on a name for it is another process the kids and wife already working on.

I suggested Pennywise, but I got a resounding "no" from everyone.

Finding "the right" name for a dog...then getting them to accept it can be a real PITA.
