Radeon R9 290x
Radeon R9 290
Radeon R9 280

From what I've read the R9 280 is a rebranded 7970. The gigabyte R9 280 has a decent cooler on it. It's finally cooled off in Oklahoma and my electric bill dropped drastically. Last night I started projects back up (SIMAP) and tonight switched to Asteroids. Santa might be bringing me an R9 280 or used 7970.

I think if the 7990's drop below $500 again I may pick one up to run through the winter and retire some of my less efficient cards.

I guess it's probably smarter to get one or two 7970's instead, but there is something appealing to me about having the 7990(essentially 7970's) in one well cooled micro atx case.

I think it might be a while before we see 7990s drop below $500.

Was looking to pull the trigger on a new card. Then noticed that increased DDR3 RAM prices have driven video cards through the roof. The R9 280x which was $299-309 is now over $400.. Even the older cards have increased in used price. Think I'll continue to sit it out and use my 580 GTX. At this point the price isn't worth the performance increase.

I don't think it's the ram. Bitcoin and clones have spiked prices. I think (hope) it's a bubble that's gonna pop soon.

Surely they use DDR5?

Wow... That was in Dec 2013...

He easily could have sold it for twice the amount
well i wouldn't say he could have easily sold it for twice that...but if he waited long enough for the right buyer he might have fetched double the asking price. the same goes for all the used 7970 being listed at $350-400, and even more so for the 7950's being listed at $300-350. just b/c there is a cryptocoin mining craze out there right now doesn't mean digital currency mining dictates the currect price of AMD video cards. miners make up maybe a hundredth of a percent of all video card buyers out there...heck, even on a computer hardware site like this, where digital currency miners are sure to congregate and form a far above average concentration of miners, they still comprise a stark minority of video card owners here on the boards. gamers, HTPC'ers, and to some extent video encoders, still far outnumber miners both around the world and on computer hardware sites like this.

thus its hilarious to see the pricing we see today on those cards, b/c if only 1 in 100 potential buyers is actually a miner, then the chances of selling a card at miner's prices is slim to none. i guarantee you that just about everyone listing their 7970s and 7950s for such outrageous prices aren't fetching nearly what they're asking unless they find a miner or a sucker...and that takes time.

if one wants to sell his/her 7990s/7970s/7950s quickly and easily, they'll have to either adjust their selling prices accordingly, or accept what would appear to be a lowball offer relative to his/her outrageous asking price. hell, it may have been before the Litecoin GPU mining craze blew up, but i didn't pay a dime over $230 shipped for any of my 5 7970s ...and now people are listing their 7950s for over $300, LMAO...good luck w/ that sale.

I bet this new radeon cards will be in demand and massive hoarding might end up to shortage of cards. I'm fine with my 3 video cards AMD radeon HD79700.

I may be a new miner, but I have no intention of paying of a $200 premium on a used card just because it can be used for mining. I'll just keep on waiting till the *right* price appears!

no, mining does not require FP64...the 7970 is popular b/c AMD GPUs mine far more quickly and efficiently than nVidia GPUs do, and of course the 7970 is king of the AMD GPUs...to be honest though, the 7950 seems to be the most popular choice for mining. while the 7970 night net a higher overall hash rate, the 7950 will have a better hash rate per watt.

Ah ok thx
Aren't the R9 290s faster though? I think the 290X is AMDs king , although I'd imagine far more expensive than a 2nd hand 7970.

oh yeah...forgot the next generation of AMD GPUs are out haha. so yes, the R290X would be king of the AMD GPUs. i'm not sure how they fare on the power consumption front, but all the reviews have them running hot (and loud consequently). so i have to assume that there wasn't much of an improvement in power consumption with the new generation GPUs (i.e. they focused much more on performance improvement)...perhaps that's why the 5970 is still them most popular mining GPU (that, and the comparatively small initial investment).

My GTX 580 will have to last or i'll go to another NVIDIA card. I should have jumped on one of the newer cards upon release before prices were driven up.

Here's the latest news on GPU's.
North America GPU prices are through the roof other countries ain't.
Lite and Bit coin have been turned down in China. The market value devaluation in coins has dropped by more than 1/3 things are not looking so bright.
Used and abused cards will be showing up because of the above loss in value and then they will not be fast enough and need ASIC processing systems.
Speculation is in 2-3 weeks cards will drop in price more toward normal for the gaming buyer.

Spuds McKenzie the brew dog in for Stitch.

I don't consider a card that's been mining abused, I'm not sure why you say that, well used? Yes!

I tried using 3 7950's and the temperature was 90c with 2 120 mm fans blowing cool air on the top of them at point blank range with good case air flow and the cpu was external water cooled. They are putting 3 cards in one motherboard to me that heat is abuse to the life expectancy of the cards and now cards run hot and throttle back to not overheat so these cards are at high heat all the time 24/7. rant rant rant

Hmm, yea that is rather hot, then the issue is not that they mined but that multiple cards were in 1 pc & not cooled sufficiently, yea that does change things.

......and now cards run hot and throttle back to not overheat so these cards are at high heat all the time 24/7. rant rant rant
Whose? yours or theirs?

Whose? yours or theirs?

In AMD's release with the squirrel cage cooling of the 290X it would overheat and cut back on core frequency big time. This was even happening on the 290 but not as bad. One of the problems was that different venders cards were performing worse because their fans weren't spinning at 2,000 rpm and in the driver AMDwas turning up to 2,200 as I recall maybe 2,250 the noise increased but the cards performed better. Then there was 2 settings quiet and full on. Many testers would only test in quiet mode because of how loud it was.

So that's a general overview.

Now we have 3rd party cards with 2 or 3 fans Gigabyte OC model clames to be so beefier to cool 450 watts of heat and run at 1040.

The reference 290 was supposed to sell for $400. The cheapest I've seen and you have to order and wait is for the Gigabyte OC from Amazon at $550. I don't know what MSRP is.
