Raptors are nice...but they just aren't worth their price premium IMO. I'd rather spend the extra money on a better video card and wait an extra 5 seconds for my games to load. Once they are loaded, I don't really care anymore.

For 300 bucks probably not worth it for me. Honestly I am not interested in having a 150GB boot drive. The 74GB raptor was perfect because it wasnt too big but fast and under 200 bucks.

Be nice if they could come out with a 3rd edition of the 74GB Raptor with the same specs for about 170 bucks.

For storage purposes I can go buy some 250+GB 7200 RPM drive for 100 bucks.

agreed. I would like nice OS/Apps/gaming drive. But I'd rather it be under $100. heh.

The whole point of getting a Raptor is to use it as an OS/Apps drive, and 150GB is pretty much overkill for that. 74GB is more than enough. 36GB should be fine too. But the 36GB Raptor is about as fast as current gen SATA drives with 16MB of cache which cost a lot less, so the best solution for enthusiasts should be a 36GB 10k/15k RPM SCSI drive.

This is really almost too big to be practical for an OS and applications drive (maybe not if you have lots of games installed, but I don't). However, my 36GB Raptor has been showing its age, and if I replace it, this will probably be the drive that I will get.

WD has by far the best warranty in the business. I have two raptors running in my system right now that i have yet to replace...good thing i have another 4 years on my warranty.

What makes the WD warranty superior to one of, say, a Seagate?

im wondering how 2 of these new raptors compare in raid 0 to 2 old raptors. since im gonna buy my new cmoputer within a month or 2 i would like to see that and make up my mind

i would disagree, when i buy hardware, the warranty is always part of the equation especially if you are payin $300 for a 150GB SATA hdd...

I'm still unclear on why Western Digital's 5 year warranty on the Raptor can be determined to be so undesirable, based on a comparison of Seagate's and Maxtor's warranty experiences in one case by one person? Maybe I'm forgetting evidence posted in another part of the thread (I did just scan parts of it). If so, please point me to the clue. Otherwise, a "clue" is what Raptor-bashers who bash based on supposed "lack" of warranty lack.

I like the Raptors because they are SATA universal. Cons of SCSI drives is that not very many motherboards support the connectivity be default, and thus you have to go out and buy a PCI or PCI-x interface SCSI card. So I support Raptor drives all the way if you just want very good hard drive performance on SATA. SCSI if you want faster.

you highlight SATA as if it's a bad thing. It's a raptor drive... aka an enterprise drive. It'll be fine. It may not be worth it, but it'll be fine.

i bolded it because it is still a sata hdd, enterprise or not. the maxline III is a "enterprise" hdd too....i guess i am just stubborn in my ways

i turn my computer on 1x a day, so i really don't care if it took 10mins to boot up...this boot up time is a dead horse and means nothing.

no argument needed. the simple fact is that a wd warranty covers just about everything short of user inflicted damage. the seagate does not cover other hardware issues. plus the technicians ability to speak english and quick understanding of what the problem is without you having to explain a bad HDD for an hour to a person who barely knows what a HDD is.

FWIW - some folks don't mind spending $150 on a Raptor compared to $100 on a 250-300gb harddrive.

And for a game like Battlefield2, getting on the map two seconds before eveyone else can give you a huge advantage.

As many have mentioned, my 74gb raptor is all I need for my o/s and apps. I've got five other drives for everything else.
