Raptors kick butt. I see the XP logo for about 1/10th of a second before getting to the login screen. I'm always the first person on a game server and I usually have a good 30 seconds to wander around by myself while everyone else is still loading the level. in BF2, it takes about 4 seconds to load a map. I can defrag the whole drive in less than 2 minutes.

For workstations and gaming boxes, the Raptors simply cannot be beat. SCSI has its advantages in the server market, but recent benchmarks and reviews have demonstrated that only the highest of the high end SCSI drives can beat the raptor in most tasks.

Why the raptor hate? I'd take a Raptor over a run-of-the-mill 7200 RPM SATA drive ANY day. If you have never used one on a desktop computer, then you have NO IDEA what kind of difference it makes. Until you've used one for a few weeks, I'd hold your tongue and stop making assumptions about performance differences.

So, what happens when i have used one (for over a year) and saw no performance loss when i switched to a Hitachi 160GB SATA2.............?

30 seconds before anyone else on a map?
Even on a 7200rpm drive, BF2 maps load in under 20 seconds (my Hitachi does it in around 10-12 seconds).......but i guess the raptor allows you to travel into the future, ahead of everyone else?

Newb here, trying my first build, thanks to all AT members who have helped me out over the past few months. I am about to buy a used 74G Raptor. Here is a FS thread in which another guy says he's selling an OEM unit manufactured in 2003 that has no warranty

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=45&threadid=1784246&enterthread=y

Ok... so is it only 'retail' versions that have the 5 year warrranty? If so, is it transferrable? If OEM versions have a warranty, is it a shorter one?

Also, someone at Hardforums was saying that the FLC units are significantly faster than the FLA units. True? I am trying to figure out a reasonable used price for this 74G Raptor, but I guess there are some variables. This is apparently a Rev 3 unit.

looking at specs one last time.... why is this drive sata-150?

such sweet specs and they didnt bump up to sata2?

maybe not any difference in performance, but its the next gen of hard drive technology... why would the second gen. raptor's be 10k 16mb sata-150 drives?

If you have an unlimited budget, raptors are ok. They outperform SCSI sometimes in single-user tasks. If you are running a server that is going to be used by anything more than a handful of users, go SCSI.

If you want to load windows faster... WTF are you doing that requires your computer get reset more than when you have to update something.

IMHO, raptors are a complete waste of money. They offer almost no real-world advantage over a good 7200rpm drive. They offer *NO* advantage in gaming (assume reasonable amount of ram). Buy them only if you absolutely need that last drop of performance for what you do, or if you want to make your e-peen look bigger in the worst possible way.

For EVERYONE ELSE raptors are a complete waste of money because for the money saved they could apply things to their system which actually have a HUGE impact on real world performance (more ram, better vid card, reliable power supply, etc!)

And you guys.. your corvette analogy falls apart... Corvette Z06 anyone? Out performs ferarris for half the cost!

But then again, the analogy works. A regular vette will be the *BETTER CAR* for you than a ferrari 99% of the time. Great gas mileage, useable trunk, reliable engine. Better price. This is like a 7200rpm sata drive. Great performance, great price!!! Or, you can pay a LOT more for a LITTLE more.

One could say the same for an Athlon 64. You could get a Sempron 2500+ and overclock it, or you could pay a few hundred dollars more and get a little extra performance.
