The GTX 460 is pretty much always faster than the 5770.

It is faster than the 5830 in everything but the Source engine (not that it is slow in the Source engine, we're still talking 100+ FPS). You really don't want a 5830 though because it is a very cut down 5870 that keeps the heat and noise without keeping the performance.

Ah...nice thanks! So in theory I should have asked more of a comparison with the 460 vs 5870 ;-) haha...My guess is though that the 460 will still top the 5870...

I found a deal on HDD's (Four 1.5TB's) and a i7 - just under $400 for all 5 so that's not a bad deal.

Nah, the 460 is slower than a 5870. A 5830 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the 5870, even though they are derived from the same chip

Sounds like a great deal on the CPU and HDD's.

Ah, and I see why you mentioned the 460 and NOT the 5870 as that is significantly more money! 460 it is then! LOL!!

Thanks again for your help.

speaking of video cards. Newegg is having a sale today...what difference am I looking at with that 460 compared to the 465 ones with the FERMI (whatever that means/gets me)...
EVGA 01G-P3-1465-AR GeForce GTX 465 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Not an expert, but from what I gathered during my research is that the 460 and 465 are very similar in performance, but the 460 runs a lot cooler and uses a lot less power... so they are worth the couple $$ more.. I went for the gtx460 768mb and in hindsight sort of wish I had went with the 1gb version for a couple bucks more....

One more question - the i7 920 is a LGA 1366...this board is not that...so with that in mind I won't be able to use the i7 920 that my friend wants to sell me in this MSI board...correct?

the 465 above is 1gb and the price is cheaper with newegg's deal today I always like to get some opinions before pressing the trigger on the gun ;-)

"Fermi" is the code name for Nvidia's current architecture. The GTX 465 is based on a severely cut down version of the original Fermi chip whereas the GTX 460 is a newer revision of the Fermi chip that is targeted at the ~$200 market segment.

Don't get the 465 or 768MB 460. The GTX 460 1GB is the same speed or faster in most games, uses much less power, and does not sound like a hairdryer.

No, you would not be able to you a 920 in that MSI board that I mentioned. Unless your friend is giving you a very good deal on the 920 (like less than $100), the 760 will be cheaper in the end because decent X58 boards are around $200.

Excellent info on the GPU's! Thanks for the advice there! A non hairdryer GPU is definitely a MUST!

As for the i7, it's exactly at $100 NIB - so that's 50% off in most cases...klinda hard to give that kinda deal up. Would this mean also having to go triple channel memory as well?

Any recommendations on a good MB which is also a reasonable buy? I was looking at the GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 which is $209 at newegg, but if I can find something just as good, but a lil less that'd be better of course

How are the Asrock MB's these days? I wasn't a fan a few years back...been seeing some decent (I think) deals for these on ebay - around $110 or so.

$100 for a 920 is indeed a very good price! The UD3R is a good board as is the ASRock Extreme 3. You don't have to get triple-channel memory if you don't want to, the 920 will work fine in dual-channel mode as well.

Thanks once again mfenn! Any other MB's within the mid-high 100's to very low 200's you'd recommend? I was reading some issues on the voltage with the asrock...but they were older reviews and might have been resolved with bios updates, but haven't been able to confirm that.

There are some other boards at that price point (MSI, EVGA, ASUS), but the Gigabyte and ASRock are my favorites. You can't really go wrong with either IMHO. In reality you are probably fine with anything as long as you stay away from utter crap like Jetway, ECS, Foxconn, and Biostar.

You should also take a look at the Antec 300 Illusion. The extra $7 (free shipping) would get you 3 more fans and blue LEDs. Well worth the price for the better cooling. Plus, I like the Antec LED fans. The Antec 300 is a cool-looking quality case. The Antec 300 Illusion is all that + snazzy.

For $7 the extra fans would be VERY nice! However the blue LEDs I want to try and stay away from because this will be used next to a big screen TV to stream movies, etc using Boxee....I'm thinking the LEDs might be a distraction when watching TV, and if I hide the PC, whats the point of the LEDs anyway haha.

brought it down to either the Antec 300 or the Cooler Master Centurion 590 both just a slight difference (within cents) of price.

Build quality-wise, those two are about the same, so pick whichever you like the looks of better.

The CM does have some tool-less features, so that may be a pro or a con depending on how you feel about those. I personally like them as long as they are well done (think Dell PowerEdge servers), but would rather turn a screwdriver than deal with cheap ones.

mfenn is right.

To clarify my earlier statement: I would go with the Antec simply because I think it looks better (plain black look).
