New Rig: NEED help!

Hey guys, I am building my first computer ever. I will be using it for school, work, and gaming (UT3). I currently have a 17" LCD that runs at 1280x1024. Judging by this you know I need all the help I can get. I don't plan on overclocking. I am usually pretty good at researching and finding good products so here is what I have so far.


Case: COOLER MASTER CM 690 ($60/$40 after rebate)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor ($284)

CPU Cooling/Heatsink/fans: Cooler Master Hyper TX, Scythe SFF21E, Yate Loon D12SL-12 (all for $35)

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L Core 2 Quad/ Intel P35/ DDR2-1066/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard ($98)

Memory: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory ($66)

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply ($100)

Video Card: 8800gt 512mb when it comes out on Oct 29th (~$250)

Optical Drive: SAMSUNG Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW S203B ($30)

HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250gb ($70) Have a 300gb 2nd HD already.

TOTAL Price $982.20


ANY comments and help are appreciated. I would like to stay around $1000 for a budget. Please comment on anything, parts you like better, etc. Thanks!

The Q6600 and the 8800GT are power hungry little beasts.
Along with your HDs, fans and other parts , I'd bump up to the Corsair HX 620W for an extra margin of comfort.
With the rebate it's not much more than the 500W version.

I'd also double the HD capacity for only $37 more with the WD WD5000AAKS.
It's a nice quiet drive.

What?

He would be just fine with the 520W psu.

Heck, the 8800 GT is a single slot card, and should use significantly less power than the current crop of 8800 cards.

I've run Q6600 G0's with 8800 GTX cards on Dell's 375W just fine.

You have no need for the 620W PSU. The 520 is more than enough for what you want to do. Also, Buy.com has it for 79.99 shipped AR right now.

You're doing it up good for a first build. I like your style! Your case and psu are great choices, I have one of each. As others have said, you'll be good for a while with that psu. Its supposed to be capable of powering SLI'ed 8800GTS, and the 8800GT will not be near that hungry, sooo yeah. The case is the coolest one I've owned for the money. Lots of space, descent cable management system, plenty of fan spots to keep that Q6600 and 8800GT running cool. Just know that it is a heavy case, and not meant to be lugged around much. If you're going with Vista, I'd say get 4 gigs of RAM, but thats just me.
