JEDI -- Again, I would request a Synthetic Underlayment instead of the Roofers' Select. In Houston, none of the roofers that I saw used felt paper. Felt paper was only on new construction. Synthetic is also required by some GAF warranties. Roofers' Select is Certainteed's felt reinforced with fiberglass. Certainteed makes a synthetic called DiamondDeck. I would request it! Added cost should be $50 at most.

roofer said altho the material cost of diamonddeck isn't much more than roofers select, labor costs to install it will add $200-$300 more.

I'm leaning towards 2c in my OP ((Landmark shingles/50yr warranty)

Synthetic underlayment is simply much better. It is basically Tyvek. It is pretty much impervious to water and forms a complete secondary water barrier on your roof.

Except for cases where the likely longer lifespan comes in to play, with all of the holes put in it from installing shingles the synthetic doesn't create a significantly better drainage plain than paper does.

I would probably still want it for all the other reasons though.

Odd, one of the claims used to sell the product to installers is the ease of use compared to paper.

A pro roofing crew papers the roof in an hour. It usually goes really fast.

Yeah that doesn't make any sense. Usually the synthetic is a wider roll than the felt, so fewer passes are necessary. It also doesn't tear and it's not as slick as felt so it's easier for the installers too.

Last point from me: All of this stuff is negotiable. All of these costs are just estimates with a decent margin built in. (Usually 30-40% or so.) His hard costs (labor and materials) on your roof are probably less than $2000. Most roofers will lose a bit of profit in order to earn your business. If you want 2C then ask for it at $3000, say you will sign today if he will give it to you for $3000. I'll bet that he shows up at your door within an hour.

Yeah, that's true. Still the same would apply to felt though. If I had shingles blown off in a storm then I would want synthetic underneath rather than felt.

I hope you understand now that if you had nicer shingles than the rest of the neighborhood, your house would be an eyesore, because it doesn't look like the rest.

For only an extra $160, the 20 year warranty seems a no-brainer, at least without reading what the warranty covers.
