Man... you people are soooooo easy to impress.

ANYONE ELSE NOTICE HOW MUCH IT LOOKS LIKE THEY STOLE FROM THIS!!

Like the buttons and shading etc... Looks like another "textbook" case of Microsoft "innovation"...

Took a look at these LINUX screenshots.

DaHitman- You are right, it looks a lot like your screenshots. I studied at least one of them a VERY long time.

everybody already knows that linux has so many skins available... not to mention being able to design your own skins...not to mention multiple desktops... linux is the s#$!.. and its practically free compared to microsoft...if only it was as easy to use and compatible as microsoft...

Yes your right...

But the point I was making is that...it seems to me that XP looks

VERY MUCH LIKE KDE's DEFAULT appearance has appeared for a while now....

Let's put the shoe on the other foot...look at how Linux's basic functional windows (close, maximize, buttons, display settings, menu boxes, menu tabs, file menu, taskbar buttons) are a copy of the standard Windows 95 style.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

True NFS4... but the color shading of the windows, the strong colored icons instead of folders....all the new features of XP seem to have a "connection" with the linux windows DaHitman pointed out....

also, linux does provide some of their skins for ex-windows users for easier transition, explaining the similar features from windows 95 and the linux feature...just like it has similar skins for ex-mac users..

but linux also provides skins that look nothing like windows at all... just thought id point that out...

<< The protection has been cracked several times, for each build released by microsoft, within a few hours of leaking. Trust me, youre not going to have to activate it if you dont want to >>

THats not so true, prior to build 2469 ppl were using a workaround provided by microsoft. When 2469 came out that stopped working and it took a week or two to get it running. And now its not acutally cracked, The rest "crack" just uses a tool for OEM to reset the OS b4 the ship it to customers. You running 2481 now? I haven't bothered to upgrade from 2475.

If you can run XP you can afford to spend the $20 a 128MB stick of ram is going for now.

I waited until Win2k was out awhile before upgrading. I'll probably do the same with XP, after they release the first SP for it. By then hardware prices will have dropped and I'll be able to pick up my 2.5 gigahertz system with a gig of ram for 2 grand

<< Isn't Windows XP supposed to be really slow and chunky (not to mention buggy)? >>

No way in h*ll.

It was quite fast and it was very stable for a beta. It actually boots up a lot faster than Windows 2000 too. I loved ClearType of all the new features.

I installed VS.NET beta 1 on it so that messed up some stuff, but other than that, it was a good build (beta 2 from MSDN).

* me pukes at KDE shots *
Edit: final3 was not bad

Looks good....doubt if I upgrade though. I still liked it better when it originally came out....as OS/2!

No matter how great it looks, the release version will have the XP family registration requirements. What these are supposed to be is that your Program Key# will only be good for something like 3 installs then you have to call Microsoft to get another for the next 3. As such, to get these new keys you have to have a registration in Microsoft's database with all of your information on it. (I never have registered any OS disk with them)
This is all part of Microsofts big internet plans where when you go to a site like Pricewatch, the computer will communicate with Microsoft and you will get a Pop-Up from a Microsoft Client telling you that you can go to such and such place to look for the same thing.
Granted this is down the road a bit, but I have already read comments from people using Office Xp that state when they went to the MSM start page after installing it they were greeted with "Hello <Their Name> and the weather forcast for their city, and they stated that they had not changed settings.

A few things about the alleged "theft"

Only the colors seem similar. Also, metallic designs have been around for a long long time. If you think that KDE is the first thing to use a metallic scheme, you're mistaken. Its nothing new. Its not innovative. Its common.

Anyone can make themes. Shortly after its release (probably even earlier), you'll see themes that look awfully close to other things. You'll see a MacOS theme, a BeOS theme, etc. No big deal. Look at Winamp for example. How many skins are there for Winamp that look like some other program?

Look at the KDE screenshots. The font on the menus, the layout of the buttons, the icons used on buttons all looks *very* familier. Could it be that it was designed to imitate the Win9x look? Obviously. Did MS invent it? Probably not.

People have been borrowing, improving, modifying, etc look and feel designs for years. Everyone has borrowed from everyone. Saying that one design here is stealing from another is silly.

People take good and/or popular ideas and try to make them better. Its been going on for years. It will continue to go on for all eternity.

Considering I alway disable "show icons using all possible colors" and the many other eye candies, this soft look will look pretty crappy on mine. Too much prettyness IMO, it would get annoying after a day.

Nope, don't like it at all. That XP screenshot makes me want to vomit.

I still think it looks like a toy. If an option is not included to totally eliminate the new UI (I don't mean a skin that looks like the old one, I mean the real thing) I won't even warez the damn thing, let alone buy it and go through the activation crap!

Never believe M$ about memory usage. They say 2k needs 64mb, but runnig it with anything less than 256 sucks big time.

And hitman, its true that KDE does have some neat skins, but I REALLY dislike is how inconsistent it is. Like you can skin KDE, but Licq won't be affected. I don't know if linux will ever achieve that uniform look windows has.

Depends on what you're doing with it. I ran win2k on a P75 with 32 megs of RAM at work and it worked great. Obviously I wouldn't be able to play any games on that box, but I didn't want to.
