New Seagate Hard drive=problems

This is a long story, but I will try to make it as short as possible. A friend?s computer was giving errors when trying to boot saying files were corrupted or missing. I checked the hard drive (IBM) with IBM?s ?drive fitness test? and it failed ? bad sectors. I tried an old hard drive I have and it booted right up no problems.

So I ordered a Seagate 120G with a 8MB cache. Put it in, turned it on and the only thing that happened is the fans came on. That?s it ? no beeps, no display, no nothing. I couldn?t even get into the BIOS. So I tried the old hard drive again and it booted right up. So I put the new Seagate back in ? nothing. I tried the old hard drive again ? no problems, new Seagate back in ? nothing.

I assume the new hard drive is bad, so I return it and get another one. I try it ? you guessed it -- same thing!! The fans come on but that?s it. No beeps, no display, no nothing. I couldn?t even get into the BIOS.

Now I put the old hard drive in as master, and put the Seagate in as a slave and run a test on the Seagate. It failed saying the MBR is missing or corrupted. I get on Seagate?s web site and find a bulletin about problems with the MBR. It says it will get corrupted when loading Windows XP and to run ?mbrfix? from the XP disc. That is all fine and good, but I?m not even able to load Windows or anything else.

Say with me I?m almost done!!!!! For what ever reason, after I had tested the Seagate running as slave, I pulled out the old hard drive and switched the Seagate over to master and it booted right up!!!!! I didn?t know why but I wasn?t arguing!! I loaded XP Professional and all looked normal. I shut it off turned it back on all is still normal.

BUT (you just knew there was a but didn?t you!!!) After I thought all was good and it sat for a few hours, I tried it again and NOTHING!! No beeps, no display, no nothing. I couldn?t even get into the BIOS. So I did the same thing as before, ran it as slave to the old drive for about 5 min. then took out the old drive and the Seagate booted right up again!!!

I have also found that if I turn on the computer with the only the Seagate in it, and nothing happens, I just leave it on for awhile (10-15min.) then shut it off and back on, and it will boot right up.

As the old cowboy says ?this ain?t my first rodeo? . I have worked on a lot of computers, and thought I knew what I was doing, but I guess not. I have tried all the BIOS settings I know of (maybe I am missing something?) and I did try the mbrfix after I was able to, so far nothing has helped. I have also ran the Seagate hard drive test again after windows was loaded and it said ?passed with inconsistencies?.

Any idea?s?????????

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jagec: Thanks for the reply.

I have tried all jumper settings -- master, slave, cable select. They all work as they should-- after the 10-15min ?warm-up? period!!!

I tried a brand new mother board, so I assume it has the latest BIOS on it. (Maybe I shouldn't assume!!)

I tried new IDE cables and have had them on and off 100 times so I am sure they weren?t' loose every time!!

Any other ideas??

The first thing that springs to mind is "power supply". Don't ask for an explanation, I don't have one. All I know is PSs are often the cause of many mysterious problems.

In my experiences with "fans but nothing else", it was usually a dead MB (which seems unlikely in your case). I did have one one computer that I could fix the problem by removing and reseating the video card (which I had to do often).

I don't know if that's any help, but it's something.

Good luck.
