I'm Bob, a good real life friend of Tony, no BS here. Well, not so much of a good real life friend, but a friend. He bought the original card thru a vender on Ebay, and wouldn't shut up about the damn thing for the week it shipped. Then he got it, and wouldn't shut up about how pretty HL2 looked, then it died on him. He got a second card, and it too was dead. He got a third card and he wouldn't shut up again, and then he came to me complaining about how it died again on him. He had been complaining about how hot he thought it ran and wanted to cool it down.
I know the guy, and while he's a fanboy to the extream, he wouldn't try and push the limits on any of his hardware. He's a good guy and doesn't have any intentions of defrauding anyone. He's been the victim of 4 different scams on eBay because he's too trusting in looking for good deals. More dollars then cents at times.
He went on an upgrading rampage on his computer after starting coming to my LAN parties. He saw that his 2.4ghz celeron was pretty pathetic, and bought his current rig straight up. It blows all of the other computers away at my LANs(i'm hosting one tomorrow night that he's going to come to), but his video cards keep crapping out on him.
I ordered a LeadTek 6800GT from
www.buyxg.com. When I got it I was estatic. I bumped my 3dMark03 score from 1710 to 10046. I fired up Star Wars Galaxies (I'm addicted, I can't help it) and jacked up the resolution to 1280x1024(I've got a cheapo monitor), and maxed out all the options and it still got 30+ frames per second. However when I opened up my inventory window the fan from my 6800GT started emmitting a horrible sound. I closed the window and it went away. This was after around an hour of playtime, and I decided to check the temp. The nVidia dodad from the control pannel said the card was at 72*C.
I have since RMAed the card to
www.buyxg.com. The card was clocked at 375/1000mhz when I got it. I did not touch any settings. While I haven't had a catostrophic failure like Tony did, I'm sure if I continued to use the card properly, I would have. A fan isn't going to last a long time when it sounds like a bearing is going out under load. That's just the way they are.
Tony and I are not trying to screw card makers out of cards. Trust me, I was none too happy about having to plug in my Gainward 4800 back in after experiancing the goodness of my 6800GT. We have just been getting the short end of the stick. Another friend of mine has also had some problems with his 6800GT, but I haven't had much chance to talk to him about what is up with his system.
[edit] I'd also like to add I shouldn't be having power or cooling problems in my case. It's a Ninja from
www.newegg.com with 2 80mm fans on the back, one on the side and one on the front. I'm running an Aspire 500watt power supply and also have hard drive coolers for the love of god. I went anal on my system when I put it in the Ninja case. There should be no airflow problems in the case, and the ambient temperature in my computer room is around 80*F.
