Thought this was interesting... I guess blasting Christina Aguilara (torture music at Gitmo) isn't good enough.

"Israel is considering using an unusual new weapon against Jewish settlers who resist this summer's Gaza Strip evacuation: a device that emits penetrating bursts of sound that leave targets reeling with dizziness and nausea.

Security forces could employ the weapon to overcome resistance without resorting to force, their paramount aim. But experts warn that the effects of prolonged exposure are unknown.

The army employed the new device, which it dubbed "The Scream," at a recent violent demonstration by Palestinians and Jewish sympathizers against Israel's West Bank separation barrier."

This would be great for house-to-house urban warfare like to clear out structures and buildings. Should work better than a gravel spewing machine??

Urban warfare is tricky, messy business. I was thinking this would be a good way to incapacitate possible enemy within a structure before entering it. Or something...

So the loud noise would keep them in the buildings they are already inside and troops can go in just like they always have?

It's a good way to annoy citizens enough to move, I can't see other application of this...might be reading into this "new military technology" a little too far.

It's not a loud noise. It's a strange low frequency that makes people sick and dizzy. The way I see it, enemy combatants within a house or something would either be so screwed up they couldn't fight, or would try and run out to get away from the sound.

Read the link... you think I'm off base here?

I suppose...I wonder if earplugs can counter this device, I'm sure they've tested for all that...

I have witnessed a experimental musician produce a sound on his synth and a very large PA in a club before a show make a sound that made you feel like your bowels would let go....

Rumor has it back in the late 70's Genesis P-Orridge did exactly that and was exiled out of the UK after making a whole city block "take the offramp on the hershey highway"...

Nothing says GO AWAY like a involuntary ass explosions.

Report back to us if the American government breaks out "The Scream" while on one of your little rebel demonstrations

Some of the new non-lethal weapons kind of scare me. Not that I'm worried about being the victim, just that law enforcement will use them a little too much in lieu of normal negotiation.

It's a swedish developed weapon, and it's totally harmless, that's the only reason i like it.

Totally harmless?

Isn't that what they said about Tasers?

From the article:

Protesters covered their ears and grabbed their heads, overcome by dizziness and nausea, after the vehicle-mounted device began sending out bursts of audible, but not loud, sound at intervals of about 10 seconds. An Associated Press photographer at the scene said that even after he covered his ears, he continued to hear the sound ringing in his head.

Ever tried covering your ears at a fireworks display? And this frequency burst isn't even loud. It probably works by employing a frequency that vibrates human organs like a tuning fork.

Like the OP said. Isn't technology wonderful? And consider this, law enforcement and military are concerned with control. If they're handed a weapon like this, and thye're told it's harmless, they'll use it first and ask questions later. Just like the Taser.

This is cool!

It guarantees that governments are immune to revolution! Just think what the brits could have done with this in the 1770's

This looks like just the thing I need for when my neighbor starts blasting his music too loud. Where can I get one?

Yeah, I watched that one during the recent MB marathon. They had an extensive setup and never could produce anything close to "the brown note."

Humanity has the unique property of being sufficiently hateful of itself while at the same time completely unconscious of that self hate to back in to its own extinction.

I was thinking the same thing. What if some private dope runs around doing it, too? I doubt there is any bans on the frequency range. Its probably around the same frequencies used by the USN that has been driving dolphins to ground themselves. Out on the west coast it was big news for awhile, but the storm has largely blown over.

OT - there is a cop in town that fires his taser relatively alot. Last year during a carnival he tazed a guy who raised his voice even though he had nothing to do with the reason the cop was there in the first place. The target dropped like a rock and peed his pants; it was in a beer garden so maybe the pee was on his pants already. Talk about shutting someone up.
