hello all. just got a 180 gb ssd. the plan is to move my os to it. plan on using program "How to Migrate OS to SSD with Partition Assistant" link: http://www.disk-partition.com/help/migrate-system-wizard.html

i have seen posts and notes as to the size of the new partition but slightly confused. when i look at my computer manager my hdd shows: 39 mb healthy 9.73 recovery and 269 os. (unsure why so large) . i think i should make the new ssd os partition 120? less?

i would rather make sure i am doing it correctly before i do it and find that i shouldnt have.

any pointers or links would be appreciated.

/thanks

Honestly, the way with the least headaches in the end is to just install the OS directly to the SSD.

Ben makes a very good point and in the end, he's correct. A clean OS install is always the best way to go.

Are you comfortable with opening up the computer and replacing a HD? If the answer is no, please just take it to BestBuy and pay for them to do the upgrade/reload.

HOPEFULLY, the answer is "YES" else you probably wouldn't be on this forum. Follow these instructions:

1. Back up everything you care about to an external HD or burn a DVD
2. Download the .iso file for whatever version of Windows7 you have (I'm assuming you have Win7?) Somewhere on your computer there should be a Windows License sticker that says "Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit" or similar and a long license key. Download the .iso file that matches what you have a license for here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/downl...cial-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/

3. I believe on that same Digital River page where you download the .iso's, there is a download for Windows7 USB installation tool. Download it. Make a bootable USB stick.
4. Replace your old HD with the SSD.
5. Boot from the USB stick, select the default installation options and Windows will do the rest. Input your license key from the sticker and you're good to go.

Drive manufacturers generally provide free reliable transfer/clone proggies which saves wasting time with unnecessary re-setup.

Another great site to try is sevenforums. Lots of info on how to deal with Win7, to include SSD installs.
