I purchased a Samsung 830 120GB SATA III SSD and would like some input from those wiser than myself as to how I should run it specific to my rig and desires. My rig is listed in my sig, and as far as my preferences are concerned, I am not entirely sure what is pertinent here. I am currently around 140GB total on my HDD, including many large games such as WoW, FFXIV, and BF3. I have read the "required" thread before posting this, but would still very much appreciate those who take the time to explain their suggestions and alternatives. I simply don't know whether I want to cache it (or how much if I do), partition it, just put the OS and games on it, Raid0 vs Raid1, etc etc. Help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Well you can't RAID your new SSD unless you buy another one (or bought two to begin with), right?

A 120GB drive is perfect for running a dual-drive system.

Here's what I would suggest:

  • Partition the whole space and use it as your boot drive.
  • Install Windows and all (non-game) applications to their default location on your C: drive.
  • Redirect your user folders' locations to your D: drive (Downloads, Documents, Music, Pictures, Video).
  • Install your three favorite games to your C: drive (C:\Games or something).
  • Install all other games to your D: drive (D:\Games is where I put them).
  • Try not to go over 100GB used space on your SSD.

All good idea's listed above.

You can also save a bunch of space by shrinking pagefile(2 gigs static should be more than enough with 8 gigs of installed ram).. deleting or shrinking the hibernation file.. and reducing system restores default size.

Better yet is to disable sys restore completely and move to a third party app to save even more space and gain improved functionality in the process.

Doing all that can give you close to 10 gigs of space back.
