I have fond memories of SC2, hopefully this incarnation lives up to it.

I never really played the Star Control games. I think I had 2. I had more fun in the Starflight series, which consumed my time back when the first Star Control came out.

It won't have Toys for Bob involved, nor will it feature the aliens for Star Control. No spathi, no ur-quan, no nothing. Not them, nor their ships.

So, really, barely Star Control at all.

Buying the rights to a series doesn't mean they're going to do a good job with it, and Toys For Bob (the Star Control 2 developers) are explicitly not part of this. Star Control 3 already demonstrated that you can, in fact, make a bad sequel to Star Control 2 if you're not a talented designer.

Since it's being done by Stardock, and I can't think of a single Stardock game I've liked, I have zero hope for this.

I'm skeptical, but Stardock does have some decent talent behind it so who knows?

I doubt they'll truly capture the feel of fun and humor of SC2 though.

Well that's a little disingenuine.

"Congratulations! You've been selected to join the Star Control Founders Program!!! Buy the Founders Package for $99.99 now!"

Yeah, no. I don't pay to test.

Especially at $100 as an entry point. Stardock isn't a scamer but they don't run a tight ship either.

What?? Jeez... what's the point then, besides stealing the classic Spacewar-style of dueling ships...

The story, dialogue and "little surprises" is what made SC2 so dang great! (And the amazing MOD-music soundtrack!) They forgot this and SC3 was a gigantic cow turd.

I didn't think they could flop any worse. :'(

Stardock does add some credibility. It doesn't necessarily mean it will be made, but it has a good chance with them. Actually, I'm a little excited about it. Stardock is one of the few developers out there that has been public about making serious efforts to revolutionize game engine design as relates to modern cpu tech. If they hit a home run with Ashes, it could give them the confidence they need to make a serious investment in Star Control. I loved Star Control 1 and 2 (3 was meh).

Neither do I. I pledge to support development of projects I would like to see realized.

I understand the risk of failure / loss, and I understand the process. I have a feeling a lot of the people jumping into Kickstarters don't.

I also share the sentiment that $100 as point-of-entry is way too steep (if that's really the case - I have not verified myself).

You really just can't let it go, can you?

Anyway, not even in the same ballpark. Stardock isn't an indie dev, nor is this a crowdfunded title. This is another in a long litany of pay-to-test games that predate crowdfunding by a longshot.

For those questioning the validity, here's a cut'n'paste from my email (some formatting removed):

Crowd funding has shown that nerds have lots of disposable income and are willing to be fleeced. ED is like $100 per expansion. No doubt because they saw how much money people were throwing at SC. For some reason now space games are expensive? What could of happened?

Agreed it will balance when more space flight games muscle in to capture dollars.

I don't know. As of right now you can still get into a SC full game package for a $30 pledge. How is that getting fleeced?

That includes a full 20-hour single-player campaign release along with a massive sandbox universe to play in.

If people want to pledge more that's their business - - it's none of mine what they choose to spend their money on.

I don't play ED because I found it a bit shallow, but I have a feeling the dev has figured out that to accomplish his vision he's going to need a LOT more resources. Space sims are incredibly complex and require massive time/effort to develop once you start getting away from procedural generation and start working on real creative assets and content. I read the developer's transcripts when ED started as well, and his scope really wasn't all that different from SC. He also wanted planetside environments and first-person interaction. The difference is how he chose to release the game in a ship-only stage of mechanics compared to SC wanting to release with all of them as core components (ship flight, first-person interaction, planetside landing zones), and then expand the surrounding content.

Apparently there was enough complaining, or possibly a lack of interest at the $99.99 price point according to the new email I received. Cut and paste of the relevant addition:

Star Control Founder's Edition - $39.99
Purchase the Founder's Edition now!
• Access to the Star Control Founder's Vault
• Access to the Star Control Private forum
• Star Control Early Access [Fall 2016]
• Star Control release [2017]

The $99.99 option is still available.

Still not paying for a full game price to test.
