I'm basically emotionally completely immune to trailers since EP1.

IMHO this one will be more Star Wars dogshit, the latest one being screwed up in similar ways to the last two Star Trek movies. Enthusiastic about JJ Abrams I am not!

PS - I did really like the original trilogy (ie. EP4 - 6). I was really excited when I watched the first EP1 trailer, I probably watched it a hundred times.

to be fair, I think JJ Abrams treatment of Star Trek is better suited to the Star Wars world. It will probably still feature way too much action, too little plot, but there was nothing in his ST films that ever felt like ST.

Its either a flashback or its not Luke. If its not luke then its Max Von Sydow

Why can't it be Luke from Ep. 7? The voice over during that scene of the trailer was him saying "I have it (the force)" and the hand is most certainly not his mechanical hand from the original trilogy. Looks like a replacement.

I really want to know how BB works. I would assume magnets, because the ball is one solid piece.

As much as CGI has improved over the last decade, practical effects and physical set almost always look better. Especially in the hands of a capable artist. I'm glad JJ Abrams recognized that. Lucas loves his CGI a little too much, which is part of why the prequels were such ugly films.

bb-8 is 2 robots. 1 is like a sphero and the head is a separate ball-standing robot

Yeah I thought for sure BB-8 was CGI until I saw him rolling around on stage. I can't figure out how the thing works.

He's gonna make up for not having lens flair through the bulk of the movie by having a shitload of flair every time lightsabers clash

There will be seizures, make no mistake

And copious amounts of trendy snap-zoom with ships flying around. I saw plenty of it already in the trailer. Just like Star Trek.

Because I know things, but I dont want to spoil. Chances of it being present day luke are very slim.

Also that actor in that shot is not Mark Hamill. Although he has lost weight for this movie, he's not that skinny. There's a lot of things in the trailer that people are talking about and the trailer is intentionally throwing them off (a common tactic). People expecting a lot of Luke Skywalker in Episode VII are in for a rude awakening.

^^I am assuming the original cast will be there to hand-off to the new cast. I will guess a few minutes of screen time each.

i can kinda see that. but one thing the bb8 droid does, that i don't see in the ball standing robot video above, is lean/tilt its head instead of just balancing on top of the other ball.

I can't find it, but I think there was some diagram showing the ball is like a hollow hamster ball with a wheeled robot inside; that robot is attached through the ball to the head portion magnetically. The robot inside the ball provides the weight needed to keep the head right side up.

EDIT:
I may just be thinking of XKCD

Power transmission to the head would be the most interesting. Guessing magnets, could be a separate battery powered. You'd need something like carbon brushes otherwise?

The live BB-8 thing is pretty cool, and gives me some hope that this might now suck since they actually didn't want to do the easy CGI out way.
