Guess I'll try more volts when I get home this afternoon

One thing I've noticed is that my board (MSI Neo4 Plat) seems to undervolt the chip most of the time (like a setting of 1.4V seems to spend most of it's time around 1.37-1.38)...I'll try 1.5 and see what I can get.

Well, I have my 165 0551 VPMW for about a week. Did testing on two different boards. Seems like my Epox 9NPA+ SLi was having temperature reading problems so I tested it on a borrowed DFI LanParty Ultra-D board. Here are my results...

I borrowed a DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D, plugged my cpu in and with stock HSF. Here's the setting for the DFI:

VCore: VID + 113% ~ 1.5255V
HTT: 290mhz
Multiplier: x9
Ram: 237 mhz 3-4-4-8
CPU Temp: 24°C idle/ 55°C load

At idle, I touched the heatsink near the base of the heat pipes and the side base of the HSF. It was cool to the touch. At full load, the pipes was warm and the side of the base of the HSF was hotter, but not enough to cause any kind of discomfort.

Ok, now I moved everything to the EPoX mobo. Here's the setting for the EPoX:
VCore: +0.2 ~ 1.6V
HTT: 290mhz
Multiplier: x9
Ram: 237 mhz 3-4-4-8
CPU Temp: 40°C idle/ 72°C load

Hot dang! You guys must think I'm crazy!! Well, again, I perform a very basic test. The touch test! At idle, the pipes and side of the base of the HSF was cool to the touch (yes at 40°C). At full load at 73°C, it was warm to the touch. Yes! Warm! I've set and reseated my heat sink plenty of times the past week so I'm sure it's on tight.

Well, here is my first post. I have been monitoring this thread, along with LOTS more like this one regarding the new stepping and such. I have gotten very little time to do any overclocking with the new processor, but here is what I got. I dont' have the prime95 pictures b/c I am too tired at 2:42 in the morning. I will get them up soon.

I was SO surprised by my ram...the value's doing the darn thing!

Other than that, cheers!

 Erm...you know the max Temp specified for these chips is 65C, right...?

is that 1.472 cpuz..if so beware the DFI mobo overvolts and depending on your bios setting you maybe giving 1.52 or more

The UPMW's are clearly better than the VPMW's. The VPMW's are "amazing" if they can hit 2.7ghz with any vcore...

@dawei
If you can touch the base of the heatsink when the processor is at 55°C you're not making good contact. 55°C should burn your hand after a second or so...either:
1. Your heatsink isn't making good contact
2. Your heatspreader isn't making good contact with the core.

I know with my opteron 165 with a xp-120 and 55cfm fan, I idle at 27°C and load at 47°C. Right now im idling at 30°C because my room is really hot (2 computers on).

@doctorweir
Clearly, its not actually at 72°C because:
1. The heatsink isn't hot at all.
2. As you can see his EPoX is incorrectly reporting temperatures.
3. At 72°C, the system would have crashed most likely.

If you touch one part of a heatsink with a 4cm^2 area 100C probe, and let it sit there for ~10 minutes, you'd notice that not much of the heatsink would be hot (especially if the fan is on)

The Copper HSF itself is absorbing ALL of the heat that the CPU is putting out, and distributing it over a much larger area.
Copper also has a very low specific heat--very easy to transfer heat in and out of it, and it takes very little energy (in joules) to raise 1G of copper 1C. (Also easy to take 1C out.)
So, while the CPU may be absurdly hot (70C) the block may only be 30-50C.
Also, 50C is only 122 F... you can sit in a 120F shower for several minutes before you start to get minor burns.

Huh? Says who? I've read a dozen or so individual's posts about the vpmw and upmw 0551 and most do 2.7Ghz, and a few have had trouble with both. I seriously doubt AMD only made a few dozen of these batches. The sample we have to work with is far too small to say that one is better than the other.. Maybe after we hear from 50 to 100 others can we maybe come up with a valid conclusion.

Also consider the skill level and experience of the people putting their rigs together. We just don't know.

Just from what I've seen it seems that the VPMW's are worse than the UPMW's. Don't forget that the 0550UPMW's were golden...if that matters?

The 0550 VPMW's don't do too bad either.

right now running at stock speeds on an MSI mATX motherboard.

still feels good though !

system has Mushkin Level 2 which was real stable in an Asus P4C800
system. 4 x 512 @ 2-2-2-5 with 10% OC.

looking forward to bumping the bus speed. might need help
understanding the MSI BIOS screens.

P.S. ordered it about 2 weeks ago from Newegg. anybody else order a 175 from Newegg lately ? curious what steppings are in the pipeline.
