At first I was going to get an Asus X99-a it seemed to have all I needed for a 5820.
Then of course my friends had to say no get a MSI, NO WAIT GIGABYTE
Newegg people are now saying the Asus has problems...on and on and on

I want to build x99 5820 32 GB memory need an M2 drive for boot etc

what do I get???

I know nothing about M2 sticks but what I have read and most things seem to be 1+ year old.

ps I picked up a corsair 110i GT cooler for $70 new.
I talked to Fractal Design and they said it "should" fit in their R5 with any x99 board.
So I will get this hoping they are correct.

I have a MSI X99A board. Has M2 slot and I use it as my boot drive. It also fits my Fractal R5. I felt that the MSI boards were cheaper and gets you more things than Asus.

Absolutely do not get anything until after next week's tech shows in germany. Expect intel to release the broadwell-e lineup, along with MSI/ASUS/EVGA etc releasing some refreshed hardware on their motherboards, like raid 0 capable m.2 and u.2, 3.1 type C native connections, maybe DP 1.3, and many other goodies im hoping to see in the new x99 boards this week

EDIT: If intel isn't releasing BW-E next week, they will by the end of march, and you'll see HW-E (5820k) prices drop as well as better CPUs to pick from in general

I have waited this long so another week or 2 won't kill me...thanks for the tip

I have talked to 2 people who have the MSI Mpower and love them. This one has M2 x4 and sure looks good.

I've had 4 Asus X99-S boards that have had problems,
one fried my cpu, sent back the last one after system won't post.
Overclockers UK said the last had bent pins when I RMA it which
Wasn't the case when I sent it but never an Asus mobo again.
Probably going MSI or Gigabyte as never had problems with them.

i've owned ASUS for many years. I'm not sure why I keep going back to ASUS (probably features)...but I've never liked them. Every single board I've bought had problems at some point. I've gone through the ASUS RMA from hell more than once...with their support teams losing my board, sending out the motherboard (with an incorrect part number sticker) and more. I can tell you as a loyal and consistent ASUS buyer, that I will never buy another ASUS board.

Ideally you want the two primary SLI/Crossfire slots (X16/X16)
to be extra slot paced apart. I've gone Asrock X99X killer, ticks all boxes (I'm a gamer who needs to OC) will report back.

I like the Gigabyte Ultra Durable series for X99 based motherboards because they have the International Rectifier digital PowIRStage VRM's which actually make quite a difference compared to other X99 boards (20-30W) when the CPU is run at full load. The new X99P-SLI also has the Intel Alpine Ridge controller for USB 3.1 which currently no other X99 boards do (but they will as soon as Intel releases Broadwell-E at CeBIT).

Well I wont be using M.2 support ever only SSD's with sata 3 6gb ports. I just need the boards to work and not be dead on arrival or do shit like corrupt the bios for no reason or go into boot loops like so many x99 users report..

Not sure why you want a M.2, as there is no advantage other than form factor, if you want fast ssd and not take up a pci-e slot, you need U.2 NVME

New boards won't have anything natively added. The X99 chipset is what manufacturers have to work with so anything new will be added as a non native component. The only area X99 really falls behind Z170 platform is in booting off multiple m.2 PCIe sticks (Raided). Perhaps they'll add a new RAID controller that will allow the booting off multiple m.2 PCie raid drives but that's all I can see being useful to add to X99 otherwise every other feature that matters is currently available (and has been for long time).

A good budget board is the MSI X99 Raider. I've been really happy with mine and they are very affordable. Has USB 3.1, M.2 PCIe and can supports triple SLI/Xfire. The VRM's are good and BIOS very flexible with memory controls (I'm running 128GB o G.Skill Trident 3000Mhz with a 5830K). I have the RAM is running perfectly at 3330mhz which is kind of insane for running with 8 sticks.

Anyways, no need to really wait although I guess waiting a week won't kill you in case there's some killer feature but I doubt it.

I keep seeing deals at Fry's on X99 boards. They have had a some MSI and a Gigabyte board in the $100-$120 range with promo code/rebate. None are the latest/greatest, but they are all sufficient to build a stable system with room to grow.

They are typically showing up in their daily promo code deals. Often they are available for shipping if you are quick enough (they typically sell out of the online by mid-morning eastern time).

I grabbed the Gigabyte X99-SLI a couple weeks ago. This week, they had the MSI X99A-Raider. A month ago, they had the X99S-Krait, which is a pretty nice board.

BTW, I put a 5820k on that board and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. My Bluray encodes went from 45-60 minutes down to 20 minutes (previous i5-3570k). It was one of the least painful builds I've ever done.

Expect them around when Broadwell-E launches (think Computex).

Yes, a typo. I personally don't think the refresh boards will bring much to offer, and they will probably be quite a wait until they hit the retail channels (Computex isn't for another month). As others have said, it will still be X99 chipset. They may add some 3rd party features, but I don't think it will be 'game changing'. I thin

You might see prices drop slightly on older boards after the refreshed hit the market. That's why the GA-X99-SLI went down to $110, Gigabyte introduced the X99P-SLI, which really only adds USB3.1 (on a header board) and faster M.2 connection. Not game changing IMO.

Thanks for this thread, very informative and helpful. I just purchased at Fry's a 5820 & MSI x99a-raider. This is to replace my old amd fx.

I have a couple questions if you dont mind.'

1. What is good water cooling system , trying to hit 4.4/6 ghz

2. What are some good memory for accomplishing same goal .

There is a bit of what is called the "silicon lottery"...meaning some chips overclock better than others. I might set the overclocking ambitions a bit lower. Water cooling won't get you that much more than a good air cooler unless you do a custom loop setup. Otherwise, the 240 or 280 size radiators typically do better (really depends on what your case can fit). Most of the closed loop/all-in-one designs perform similarly.

Memory won't really make that much difference in the CPU overclock, but it may in the overall system speed. Just stick with a decent brand and you should be fine.

Im in the same boat have you purchased a mb yet, i was thinking of going with the asus x99 pro or x99-a but the mb the only thing i need to finish the build. My last 2 builds have been msi and i have nothing but good things to say about msi ive had no trouble at all. And i have a gigabyte board from my first build with a e8500 thats still kicking it and never had an issue. What ddr4 ram are you going with i picked up some ripjaw 3200mhz. I fill like i hear way more horror stories of broke or defective mb or compatibility issues with x99 boards than any other after searching the web. I want to overclock and want a good board but my spending limit is a little over $300 but less would be nice. And i went with a h110i for the cooler.
