New things about the PS3?

Hey, in the next month or so, i'm gonna buy a PS3. Didn't read or checked anything since the coming of the 250gb versions.

Is there new stuff going on the PS3? Anything I should avoid or take a look at? Which HDD size would you recommend (not about price but is there one version with more troubles than the other?)?

It's probably stupid but instead of buying a DVD or BR player I though i'd get a PS3 since I could game on it AND watch movies, etc.

Thanks for your insight!

Doubt it. Just get any PS3 you want. There is nothing special about one PS3 over another other than the specs listed.

That's why I got a PS3 as well, occasionally game and watch movies. Just get whatever PS3 that you can get in the sore. They're all newest version and just choose whatever size harddrive you want. Me personally I would just go with the cheapest option.

If you want, for the normal $300 price you can get Killzone 3 bundle. Even if you don't play the game you can sell it and it doesn't cost you any more than a regular PS3.

PS3 is a very good DVD / blu-ray player, and is also good for Netflix streaming, Hulu Plus, and Vudu. There are no known upcoming changes to the PS3 features. There will another price drop someday (probably by xmas 2011) but no one knows when and I haven't seen any rumors of it happening soon.

160 GB is plenty of space unless you want to load a huge MP3 library directly onto the PS3 (but you could also use an external USB drive for that).

If you use a universal remote (or plan to) you have to buy a separate IR adapter for it. Just an FYI, not trying to talk you out of it. Not much reason to get a larger capacity unless it's a bundle you're particularly interested in or something. Media can be stored on an external drive, or if you're feeling adventurous you could upgrade the drive yourself if you ever feel limited by it.

I use my ps3 for playing music over the TV. The earth/space visualization is enough to sit and stare at while my music is playing for HOURS - mesmerizing...

I also run photos and music during the holidays - all family members email me pics and I drop them on a thumb drive to cycle through. It turns into 20+ people all gathered around the TV enthralled. Almost have to tear them away...=)

Putting a new harddrive in is very very easy, and instructions from sony are given. So go with the cheapest and put your own HD in if you need a larger one.

All PS3s play PS_1_ games. It's PS_2_ game BC that has been gone for a couple of years now -- it required extra PS2 hardware that they removed to cut costs.

Still, $300 without PS2 BC vs. $600 for my my launch 60 GB with it.

And there's no more compatibility with PS1/PS2 games right?

I'm not sure how universal it is (i.e. some titles may not be supported), but even current revision PS3 hardware should play original Playstation software. Only specific older models of the PS3 have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.

Do they play PS1 CDs or do you have to buy them from PSN?

There is a $30 combination BT/IR remote that I bought from Amazon that works great with my PS3, Onkyo A/V, and Panasonic TV. No separate IR adapter required. I recommend it to anyone that doesn't have a Logitech Harmony fetish. It works great.
