uncJIGGA, you are a disgrace to my skin color.
Don't you think you're being just a little bit harsh? What's wrong with making judgements on the music I'm exposed to??
The only genre you people even know is the mainstream rap which radio stations and MTV cram down people's throats.
As far as my original post goes, this *IS* the original topic. I'm not passing judgement on the underground stuff I don't listen to. gigapet suggested that I get into more of the underground scene, and I pointed out that a LOT of the good artists in the 'underground' get crowded out...they don't get the airplay and you don't see them on TV. You *might* hear about them if you pick up a copy of SPIN or whatever from time to time, but that's about it. You also have to remember that exposure to the 'underground scene' is very much dependent on where you live. If you're not in Detroit, NYC, Bay Area etc. you're out of luck, unless your city has a good club circuit.

Others in this thread have attempted to educate mainstream rap fans on good artists to listen to. You on the other hand haven't contributed anything positive to the discussion. Get off your damned high horse...

I agree. I dont like Nelly, I don't like 50cent. I hate J5. But I do listen to some of the southern rappers. Paul Wall and Chamillionaire are crazy. I can't wait for their new album.

Copywrite is a good example of a white boy underground rapper. Representing Columbus too. He dated my friends sister, cool guy.

I know you have heard CunninLinguist, right?

Okay, back on TOPIC. I think the St. Lunatics have a lot of skill. Murphy Lee's album is dropping soon and that is gonna be hot. Ali's last album was straight fire. Boughetto was a great song, but he just didn't get any exposure.

I think Lloyd Banks is a better rapper than 50cent, and I have no question in my mind that Young Buck is better than both. Before you go apesh!t on me, Young Buck has had two record deals (that I know for a fact, but I beleive he had three) with UTP and the Hypnotize Minds. Young Buck is defintely representin CashVille as well as any other rappers and is in Gunit to get some more buck and more exposure for a better deal.

And you never heard of any rappers out of New Orleans huh?
Shows how much you know. Posse rappers do have real talent, but you need connections - you can't just be anyone from the street. It is a lot easier if you know people already in the business.

So if a friend told his employer you would be a good guy to hire, does that mean you have no skill? No, you need a break to get a leg up on the competition.

I still consider those mainstream. I'm talking about the Living Legends, Hieroglyphics, RJD2, Swollen Members, Moka Only, Atmosphere, Anitcon, Cannibal Ox... Not that played out shyt. Enough wit that violent shyt... What are trying to prove?

LOL, a cousin of mine in Calgary got me hooked on Swollen Members. Says his band once did a rock/rap jam session with them when a small club in Calgary double booked them...I thought that was pretty cool! Of course, this is before they started blowin up in Canada and then North America...

It's nice to see that i'm not the only person over here who knows who these two are. Chamillionaire is probably in my top 3 fav rappers right now. Have you heard Get Ya Mind Correct?

I've heard that before. Friend of mine once told me that when he tried to make it on his own he fell flat on his face, and then Suge Knight/Death Row helped him rebrand himself as a 'gangsta rappa'...of course this friend of mine hates 2Pac so I don't know if this is true or not!!

Y'all of helped me fill my Kazaa queue...I'm gonna listen to some of the stuff you mentioned when I get home. If I like what I hear I'll go buy a few CDs.

And don't think I only get my musical fill from MTV and the radio. In fact, I don't watch MTV (except for Punk'd) and usually my radio is tuned to sports talk radio, classic rock or NPR. Most of the stuff I listen to is classic rock from the 70's/80's, 80's pop music, or rap circa 1990-1997. Most of the CDs I buy are lounge music, lo-fi, house, trance or something similar (stuff you never hear on the radio...at least not where I live.)

I think the problem I have with finding good rap is linked to my graduating from college and moving back to Charlotte...I don't hang with the same crew anymore so I don't get to talk about rap or listen to music with my old friends anymore...

often before a single solo rapper makes it in the business, he has a group from his area. That's his group. They bootleg songs, they rap together, they hangout, they are his friends. Rap brought them together. Usually they make a pact, which is, if one makes it then they are gonna try and bring their whole crew in. What' the matter with that? If they aren't talented, the people will know and not buy the cd. The label doesn't pay foreign faces to be part of the group. It's the rapper's friends.

Think 8 Mile. Eminem has his crew and always rolled with them. He won the contest and big ups his friends. Look at his gimpy friend, Bob. He's down for Bob.

Eminem - D12
Nelly - The St. Lunatics
50 Cent - G Unit
Jay-Z - Roc-A-Fella family (Memphis, Beens, Freeway) ...
DMX - Bloodline and Ruff Ryders
Dr Dre - Snoop, Warren G, Nate Dogg
Busta Rhymes - Flipmode Squad
Ludacris - Disturbing tha Peace
Biggie - Junior Mafia (Lil Kim)
Ja Rule - Cash Money Clique

Solo Artists who came outta Groups

Mos Def - BlackStar
Q-Tip- Tribe Called Quest
Lauryn Hill ,Wyclef Jean - The Fugees
Rza, Gza, Method Man, ODB, Ghost Face Killah, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon- Wu-Tang
Tupac - Digital Underground

Threads like this remind me of the kind of people who listen to rap, and what they "think" rap is. Seriously, go listen to gay-z or Ja Rule, and tell all your middle school friends how "tight" the new "joints" are (gay-z sucks but I have a ton of respect for him since he was makin tons of $$$$ before he ever rapped, and formed his own label). Some people do not have a clue as to what is going on, and the kind of effect rap music has on middle school kids from Wisconsin is hilarious. All of a sudden everyone has some sort of story how they know some kid in the ghetto, or grew up with this one black kid. Just let me tell you; telling people you have black friends, and/or listening to rap does not make you cool no matter how much you think so. Continue on.
