Hey I am planning on buying a dslr camera. I want some advice as to what model to get? I want a beginners model, but don't mind paying a little more if it's worth it. I like value buys. I saw the rebel XTi which looked decent. Thanks in advance for any help.

Go to a store and try them out in your hands before buying. Based on specs I was fairly convinced I'd be most happy with a particular brand/model. When I actually tried it out at Best Buy I found it didn't fit my hands at all. Also think about what lenses you might like to use and support for off camera flash if that is something that you might use.

That is a separate flash unit that can attach to the camera's hot shoe. But, most of the friendlier DSLRs have built in flashes, although they do not perform as well as a separate unit.

Ironwing's advice is good. Go to a store and handle all the cameras you are interested in Touch and feel are important. The, do consider what family of lenses you wish to be linked to.

what's off camera flash?

Simply a flash unit that is triggered off camera. Check Strobist: Lighting 101

I think what Ironwing is referring to is support for wireless TTL metered off-camera flash. Just about any DSLR can be fitted to trigger an external flash, but the drawback is you must use manual flash power settings. With support for wireless metered flash you can let the camera decide on flash power and adjust results accordingly via the camera body.

Somewhat bullshit advice in my mind. Because I have my feet in both camps, the old style film 35mm single lens reflex camera's, and now the more modern digital single reflex camera's.

The complaints then and now are basically the same, too complex for the average person to understand, give me a point and shoot instead. But still, if you had a bit of geek in you, the single lens concept was ever so more versatile, the delimiter was how deep your pockets were.

Well, now in this digital age, some but not all of us are more geeki, but the thesis of my post is that digital camera's have a far far far more steeper learning curve. Simply because digital camera designers have shifted simple easy to understand and quick to change mechanical controls to computer menu driven controls that are slow and hard to change. Thereby losing the versatility, ease of use, and spontaneity that attracted users to the 35 MM film format vs the larger format film cameras that could give better resolution but were only useful if the shot could be composed at user leisure.

Keep in mind that you are buying into a system and you need to look at the prices and quality of additional lenses, flashes and remotes. Look and see what software the camera manufacture offers for processing raw files and the cost.

Yeah. Wireless flash changed my life.

You didn't mention what you plan on shooting.

Good fast glass is going to be just as important, possibly even more important than the body you're using.

If you plan on getting serious, it's an expensive hobby and you're going to be better off buying a quality body upfront (Nikon D7000 Canon 60D) and getting a nice 50mm prime to start with. Then go from there as you get more familiar with the body and the features it offers.

the sony alpha 330 is a sort of mediocre/subpar dslr, but it's easy to use, and i suppose can sort of act as a transition between point and shoots and DSLRs, since it has a decent liveview and is mostly geared toward auto settings.
if something like that is what you're looking for?
