New to Linux

I just installed RH linux 7.2. I'm trying to install a few things. First of all, I tried to get the sound card to work (diamond mx300). I shelled out of G and typed "su" and logged in. then I typed "sndconfig" and I got an error "bash: sndconfig: command not found"
what am i doing wrong?

Maybe the $PATH variable doesn't get reset when you use su

try /sbin/sndconfig

or maybe

/usr/sbin/sndconfig

hmm...it gave me an error saying PnP OS needs to be disabled in BIOS. I did that. Now it's saying Vortex2 isn't supported. Any ideas?

edit: I just went to RH's site and didn't find the sound card chip to be supported. Is there a way to use a generic driver?

you could try the OSS drivers, don't know if they support your card but worth a try.

I had trouble with vortex2 card back before aureal was destroyed (I hate creative ). I had trouble getting their drivers to work in slack 7, but not mandake. IS anyone supporting 2.4 kernels and vortex2 besides the pay for drivers open sound company thing?

There are Vortex2 drivers on sourceforge that seemed to work well (back when I had a vortex) but I'm to lazy to look up the link. The OSS drivers also support it but you have to pay for those

You can try A;lsa. I know the Vortex 1 is supported not sure about 2.

nope...oss requires me to keep enabling it and aisa doesn't have it. i think i'm gonna swap for my gf's Live. thanx for the help
2 more things: I'm running KDE and messed up my kpanel. The task bar thingy that shows what windows I have open (like in MS Windows) is gone...so I dunno what programs are open. how do I bring that back? And also, the lil thing that shows my 4 desktops in the panel is gone...I accidentally removed it. I can't seem to add those 2 things back and I coudn't find help in the howto guides.

Eh..and while I'm at it, the font in netscape is very small and difficult to read. I tried changing it through netscape's preference, but it's still darn tiny. Any help here?
And so that I don't take up much more bandwidth, where'a good place to ask these kinda questions? I dont' wanna use a newsgroup cuz I don't like wading through all the emails (i only have a yahoo account capped at 6mb). Any other options? thanx again wonderful people!

All I know about KDE is that it feels too slow for me. So Ill try and help with Netscape. Make sure you choose a BIG font. I have mine set at 18.0, and make sure that you select the button that says something about overriding the page with your defaults. Works for me most of the time.

Taskbar: right-click on panel/select panel/select add/select applet/select taskbar

Pager: same as above accept select pager instead of taskbar as the last step
