New to Mac

Hello all, i seem to have aquired a mac<5200/200>. it is running os 8.1....i know, older.. am running into a problem, family needs messegers <msn, aim, icq, yahoo> for school<OL classes> and to keep in contact with family<cheaper than a call to them>, problem is noone has messengers available for this older version of MacOS. anyone know of where i can get them or a "all in wonder" like trillian for it?

all list suppport for 8.6 and up(prolly work). Yahoo supports 8.1 and up.

Nope, Will need 8.6 or higher. Look on eBay and you should be able to find a copy of 8.5 for very reasonable, and then freely upgrade to 8.6 from apple.com.

MemorySolutions.com Has ver. 8.5 w/8.6 update available.

if everything fails, try installing linux on that machine.
and run IM software for linux instead.

but only if you're familiar with linux consider this as an option.
it could be a bigger pain to get a linux running on that machine.

sry, this is more for the family, not for me, they need something that they are not afraid of....
already did the *nix thing neway, well, in the process of on my other box. sry, but i wouldent use linux, the more about it i learn, the more i like *bsd.

You could use IRC rather than an IM program .... I have an old powerbook (180mhz) with OS8.6 and BitchX mac ...

you could also set up a little forum to keep in contact

and if you are thinking of Linux ... Yellowdog should work ... but it may be a pain to install

Actually getting Linux to work on a mac is not that hard, i did it on mine but I couldn't really use it for anything, X was just painfully slow.
Anyways I would also suggest you going ebay get 8.5 or 9.0 and then upgrade as much as you can from apple.

i picked up 8.6 off ebay last nite for $12! cool. wonder how well it would<or wouldent> run on ths Duo 280c......
