In all my games, I just expo early into natural, turtle up, and while pumping out a nice balance of units on the way (all used defensively), go straight to 3/3 mass BCs. This usually means I have 2+ expos by the time I achieve this, depending on the map.

It's totally a bad strat that should only really work in Bronze.

Why waste your time practicing a strat that isn't that great? Usually some combination of the Ms (Marine, Marauder, Medivac, Mine) is pretty effective, and it would probably give you a far better sense of Terran macro. If you want to try it, you could always sort of step up to the tougher combinations. Marine + Medivac is probably the simplest and is very effective. Adding in Mine is probably the hardest given you need to understand proper placement for offensive and defensive purposes.

I gave up on SC2 because they left way too much micro in the game, imho to placate pros who threatened to leave if SC2 were too streamlined, but also in part because of the stress of an actual win-loss record. When I play games I like to relax, like TF2, I can join or leave a game at any time and just have fun.

I agree, but I also find the custom games to be very relaxing and enjoyable as an alternative... of which there are many! And... there's always the AI (but that's usually 'too easy' or 'too hard'). I've probably spent more time playing custom games than competitive.

Because it's fun, and I want to start off by having fun, rather than diving straight into being ultra competitive.

I figured since ranked and unranked 1v1 uses the same MMR, that unranked works with placement too. If it doesn't, then everything makes sense. Still really frustrating though.

I also don't consider this game that old tbh, considering I was playing WC3 as late as early 2009. Now that game was old by then. I figure it's old enough though that any players still around have an advantage, and all the casuals have moved on.

Trust me, there are PLENTY of really bad players around still.

Just let the ranking system get you placed appropriately first. In bronze and silver you can basically do anything you want, any strat is viable.

I prefer the SC1 system because I preferred to play stress-free loss accounts. It meant that I rarely played 1v1 but I got to play with friends and win or lose, I always left the game. If everyone on my team was on a loss account, then the other side got a free win to boot.

What are you talking about?

Your problem is to not care about your ranking --> problem solved. If you win you win, if you lose you lose. If you are going to win, leaving 3 minutes earlier changes nothing. Even then, 3 minutes is a long time! Worst case you play against someone who wants to make it painful and hide a unit in the corner of the map and hope you don't notice it after you destroy all their bases.

If you are going to lose, you always have the option to resign and end it earlier. Nothing is forcing you to stay in the game when you know you are going to lose.

As for your second point, SC2 has far less micro and even macro than SC1, yet you state you prefer SC1. The game has a lot of automation and 'nice to haves' that the first never had.

Have you ever had a SC1 loss account? If so, you will know what I mean then. If I'm playing with an awful teammate and loss is inevitable and it's not fun, I can just leave at will rather than drag things out. (Losing can still be fun with good teammates.) If I'm playing with other loss-account holder friends, we can just leave if one or more of us has to eat dinner, or drive somewhere, or whatever. If I know victory is inevitable, I leave--it never gets to the point where I'm trying to hunt down that one last Terran command center floating in a corner.

I said I preferred SC1's ranking system which is what the other guy and I were talking about, not SC1 overall.

SC2 is a better system if people would accept their place. If you're in the bronze league and playing others there, you can still have fun games. Much more fun than going up against smurf accounts from SC1. People get too caught up in their rank and don't realize it doesn't matter once they stop playing. Have fun while you are playing.

I think that's the OP's point. The way the ranking system is currently working for him has created matches that are one sided. Having an opponent that you at least have a chance of beating is nice

No, the ranking system works fine. He's just not using it, as I explained earlier in this thread. The SC2 ranking system works quite well when used as intended. Granted, its not his FAULT that he wasn't using it properly, as it isn't really explained clearly anywhere in game. But thats the fault of Blizzard's poor communication, not the ranking/matchmaking system itself.
