New to XP - How to install it on a new drive??

I have a full version of xp, I formatted a brand new drive.
I usually work with w98, boot off and disk, load the win98 dir to c drive and run setup from it.
When I tried to run setup off the xp cd, it said it was not a dos based program.
Is there a dir to copy to c:, like win98 or do I run something from the cd in dos??

I put the cd into a win 98 se machine and it asked if I wanted to upgrade it to xp and looked as though it would have done it??

Do I have to install another os first and then install xp, I have the full version of xp pro, not an upgrade or does it matter??

briddle, all you have to do to install Windows XP is boot from the install CD. You don't want to format the drive before you boot from the install CD because the XP install program has a built-in feature for partitioning and formating your drive(s). If you have a blank drive, all you'll have to do is hit the ENTER key during the partitioning step of the install to have XP's install program automatically partition, format, and then install XP. It's very easy to do.

Run Winnt.exe from the i386 folder after booting with an Win98 disk.

Thanks, guys. I did not think of booting from the CD. Is it a way to put all the files on the pc like the win98 directory or does it do it for you, so you are not asked for the cd all the time.

After you get it installed, you could copy the i386 folder from the install CD to your hard drive. If XP adds for the install CD, just point it to that folder on your hard drive.
