Seems like there are hardly any WWI games. I guess combat was a little too one dimensional.

I remember some RTS back in 2004 was trumpeting itself as a WWI game, but the game neither looked nor played well, so it was dropped. Frankly, the combat was initially interesting, but because of the stalemate and the poor logistics and planning ahead of all these commanders, the war became bogged down into a war of pure attrition with lots of innovative commanders who were hamstrung by their governments and by the "WAR IS FUN" attitude of the chief generals in charge.

The Germans' desperate break through in 1918, and some British Enfield rifle action in 1916 were very impressive, so there was some non-Trench warfare, but the Trench warfare reflected the crap attempt at the Top Brass to either tactically innovate, or create reflexive squads reminiscent of what Rome first did.

By and large, World War 1 was Europe throwing out three thousand years of finely tuned military doctrine in its attempt to eagerly kill itself as soon as possible.

Interesting that IGN hints at it, and that Turkish magazine is a big fan of Creative Assembly's, but the mods at Total War think its fake...the non-CA mods of course. I'm not sure what to make of it. They built that warscape engine for naval combat, and if its just Shoguns, then they wasted about 4 years of development.

I'm a bit skeptical too. IGN has a "mystery trailer" on their PC page, which I'm guessing is for Shogun.

My vote would be for:

Rome: Total War 2
Shogun: Total war 2
Greece: Total War

In that order.

I never played Shogun, which is why I guess I wouln't much care for it considering how "focused" it is, but a lot of TW fans played Shogun and thought it was one of the best games of the series because of its depth and how it prioritized strategy and tactics. The AI was pretty deadly too, but that was because the game was not as complicated then.

If it is Shogun 2, that would be awesome. I never really got into the original when it was available. That is to say, by the time I knew about it I didn't have the means of playing it. By the time I did I was no longer interested and the graphics were lousy to me.

That background music is from Shogun

It's definitely Shogun2 if that is the "teaser video" I still have my old copy of the warlord edition with all of the sprites. I just hope they have naval combat but, I don't know how much they did in that period. That was the major improvement for Empire! I am excited.. I played that game with each faction for a year solid.

Here's the thing guys. The Countdown is on 1682.

There are 16 more days until the game is revealed at E3, unless the timer slows incredibly when it gets to the 16th century, I think it can't be Shogun 2, at least not the way the "Press Release" said it would be.

The Press Release said it would take place in 16th Century Japan.

If the Countdown Timer goes past the 16th or even the 15th century, I think we should be able to rule out Shogun 2, at least ruling out what that Press Release said.

From their website.
Shogun 2: Total War™

MASTER THE ART OF WAR TO BECOME THE UNDISPUTED RULER OF MEDIEVAL JAPAN

In 2000, the Creative Assembly re-invented the strategy genre with Shogun: Total War, an unprecedented blend of 3D real-time battles and turn-based management game and the first offering in the multi-award winning series. With over 7 million units sold and universal acclaim from the press and community, Total War has consistently been at the cutting edge of the genre and is today one of the most successful PC franchises of all time.

In 2011, the makers of Rome and Empire: Total War will release the sequel to the game that started it all. Shogun 2: Total War will take long-time veterans and newcomers alike to the next level of strategy gaming on PC. Based on 10 years of experience in making Total War, Shogun 2 is the perfection of the series with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI), revolutionary multiplayer modes, brand new campaign map options and epic 3D real-time battles.

It is the middle of the 16th century in Medieval Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. The player takes on the role of one Daimyo – the clan leader – and will use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal: re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun – the undisputed ruler of Japan.

Set during the golden age of Samurai warfare, Shogun 2 brings to life the most turbulent period of Japanese history.

Total War redefined:

Shogun 2 is the ultimate refinement of the original formula with a new, cutting-edge AI, more polish and online functionality than ever before. The result is the perfect mix of real-time and turn-based strategy gaming that invites both veterans of Total War and new players to experience the enjoyment and depth of the series.

New character progression:

Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.

A complete single and multiplayer offering:

Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode. Join 8-player multiplayer battles with your own upgradable avatar and climb the online Leaderboard to show the world who reigns supreme. Also including exciting new modes of team play for clans, a first in the Total War series.

New Generation AI system:

Developed according to Sun Tzu’s principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.

Improved land and naval battle gameplay:

Land battles never felt so realistic with new multi-staged castle sieges and terrain features changing according to the weather and time of the day - turning each engagement into a tactical challenge. Set buildings on fire to force garrisoned troops out and use your units’ special abilities to turn the tide of the battle. Naval combat also offers more variety with the addition of coastal battles. Islands can work as effective cover for your ships, while sand bars and reefs can be used as traps against an enemy fleet.

Accessible and in-depth empire-building gameplay:

A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents – each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials, gradually revealing the depth of the Shogun 2 campaign map – the heart and soul of the Total War experience.

There will be naval warfare, but the ships won't be as massive and will mostly use boarding parties I suspect.

I'll get it, but after my experience as a pre-order customer of Empire, I may wait til its been out a while. That said, I highly doubt they make the same mistakes (as Empire) again. I bet it will kick ass, frankly.

"the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety."

This is a brand new concept I've never heard any company be claiming to do before! Err wait... Well surely this time it'll be the real deal.

Well I've never played the original Shogun, so it will be new to me! I just hope they return to their roots.

Empire Total War was generally disappointing. I pretty much threw it into my backlog after my first siege battle, totally not what I was expecting even if it was historically accurate. Regular land battles were alright, think I had the most fun using canister shots.
