I didn't think sin cos tan were that complicated in the first place...

I read chapter one. I don't think he is a crackpot. His book is written toward math instructors and other mathmaticians. I don't know if anything will come of it but I think it might be worth exploring. There are probably teachers out there who can take what he is proposing and better present it for students. It is far too premature to discard his methodology or to rush into class with it.

I have no doubt that his method WORKS, it's just that I have SEVERE doubts about the ability to interrelate it with higher math and even moreso about how much "easier" it is.

That's what I said... his system is equivalent. He just takes different relationships and gives them different names, completely bypassing angles. That was relatively brilliant. Super. But, he's an idiot for believing his method is easier for students to understand.

I'm in pre-calc, and we just learned the unit circle and the law of sines...now the law of cosines...I could do without it...

"But it's easier for students to understand because I came up with it and I teach for a living!!!!!!!!!!"

Maybe they should be taught spelling first??

Blah, calc has been relatively stagnant since, what, back when Newton invented it? I don't think anything needs changing now.

From the op's post i don't this invalidates sin/cos/tan i think it just is an alternate view of looking at trig calculations.

from the blurb above, it sounds like he does it with quadratics and other similar functions which i found MUCH more cumbersome than sin/cos/tan.

I'm an engineering student, and I am wondering the same thing.

What's difficult about trigonometry?

How about they try to replace something that is ACTUALLY difficult, like vector calculus? People who complain about trig are complete pu$$ies

As a physics student, I don't see this impacting my life at all. If I'm suddenly a TA or professor for some class and the kids don't know how to draw a sin wave, then I guess those students will just be fscked.

This certainly sounds like a good idea for relating shapes, arcs, curves, etc. However, I don't see it replacing our sin functions in the near future. Trigonometry is made to be useful, not easy.

How am I supposed to describe the behavior of a qauntum particle in a voltage well without a sin function? That's just how it behaves! =p

Since it doesn't appear that calculus will be rewritten anytime soon to include this method, I'd say no, it won't affect you.

Besides, you should know trigonometry like the back of your hand. You need it for pretty much every engineering class that deals with vectors.

no offense but you are in pre calc When you come to higher levels of math, something as simple as sin and cos will be the LEAST of your worries. I understand people's desire against moing away from something they understand to something alledgely "simple"...but even in this case I'm slightly skeptical.
who knows 30 yeras from now we may all be learning quadrance and spread instead...but sin and cos aren't "Difficult"...and if they are well you know not to get into too much math or science.
