New Trojan Detected

Ran TrendMicro to scan for viruses. Found a new Trojan file and quarantined it. Checked it out...

TROJ_GENERIC: avg71free_371a669.exe

This is the AVG free version downloaded from the AOL link.

Now I don't know if somehow I downloaded an infected version, if that file "got" infected, or if TrendMicro just doesn't want you using another company's product, but any way you look at it it's a bit scary.

I moved this to the security forum as I think it's more appropriate there and the in house Trend/Kasperski experts are more likely to see it

I'm confused. Your TrendMicro antivirus detected a trojan in the AVG Free installer, sounds like. Did you mention Kaspersky by mistake, or did you have their scanner check the file as well? Where did the file come from, AOL's home site?

False positives do happen sometimes. One day at work, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise summarily nuked everyone's copy of Microsoft Excel2000's excel.exe file, for example. Fun :Q

Poor titling. My bad. I interchance AVG and Kaspersky all the time. But yeah, that's what happened. I hope it's an intermittent false positive, and doesn't make people stay away from AVG.

there is nothing wrong with the AVG..........Trand Micro sometimes behave in such bizarre way

Yea it has done it to me before. Ignore it. When i go to avast.com Trend Micro says it's a dangerous site. Just ignore it.

That installer (ver 7.1) is from sometime before Feb. 2007 anyway, which means that it's very outdated now. An installer that old (I use old ones too when it's all I have) often requires an update before it can get the current (ver 7.5 now) version, when a more current installer download will at least only require 1 update. That can be a big deal if all you have is dialup for the machine you're installing to.
