Check the TV's specs about how it treats each input. HDMI is likely preferred, but not always.

I use a DVI to HDMI cable. Works well.

EDIT: However, I do have trouble running my TV at native resolution (1366x768) with it. I have heard that using a VGA cable instead helps to get the true resolution instead of having to drop to 1280x720.

THIS

Using VGA TV's typically have resolution limits on the signal. This is a main reason why HDMI is preferred.

Also the quality will be improved using HDMI

I also use DVI->HDMI. If I was buying a new motherboard for an HTPC, I'd get one with onboard HDMI so it has one cable for video/audio.

See my edit and Aikouka's post. I'm going to try VGA when I get home today; see if I can get my TV running at native res. It's only a 32" but it still looks great. If it works right I might just stick it right on my desk instead of my 20" monitor. Although the low native resolution could be a problem for computer use.

HDMI > VGA

On my roommate's 52" VGA could only support 720P. He needed to use HDMI to get the full resolution.

I have a 26" 720P Bravia and use the VGA input. 720P is 720P no matter what size the TV, but with some setups you won't be able to get the proper resolution set when connecting via HDMI (as in my case).

Well, probably helps that my TV is 720p, so if that would be some issue on a 1080p Samsung DLP, it doesn't affect me regardless. I've had trouble with getting the proper resolution out of Windows through both connections in the past and well... finding a VGA cable was easier (and cheaper, since I have tons and don't have tons of HDMI cables), but I do dislike having that heavy cable+adapter weighing down on my video card.

I guess I also look at it as freeing up a HDMI port for something else since my TV has a dedicated PC connection.

VGA signals are analog and will vary in quality depending on cable length/quality, the display also has to be in sync or it can look really bad. HDMI is all digital .

I have tried them both on my tv in my bedroom a PC I built for the bedroom I sold I used the HDMI input, and now I got my laptop, cheapo, to the VGA, and thought it was gonna suck, but it looks just as good as the HDMI did running at 1280x720, so really its up to you and what your going to be doing with it.

My only problem is I cant get my laptop and tv to produce a correct 1024x768 image on my set without it being all messed up, other then that it will do pretty much most of the usual res without corruption through the VGA. Using HDMI though I had ZERO res problems at all on ALL res upto 1920x1080 though, but this laptop doesnt have that much power to go much further then 1280x768 if Im lucky to even get anything to run at that as well anyway, let alone anything higher.
