The mounting system is redesigned so it fits the other types of sockets.

The listing on Zalman's website doesn't mention Socket A for the 7000A - just 462 and 754. So do I understand this right, that the new model won't fit my Athlon XP T-bred?

I believe Socket 462 = Socket A? Check out point three on the product page:

3) Intel Pentium 4 (Socket478), AMD Athlon/Duron/Athlon XP (Socket 462), and AMD Athlon 64 (Socket754) compatible design for broad compatibility.

It should work your Athlon XP as long as your mobo has the clearance.

Oh, okay - you're right. I found some stuff at Tom's Hardware, then on CNET shopping where they describe a motherboard as "for Socket 462 (Socket A)". Never put that together. Thanks!

It seems like the 7000A and the original 7000 are the same except it just gives you the extra mounts for the Socket 462/A. I wonder if Zalman will sell the Socket 462/A mounts and stuff.

The Zalman weighs 773g

SLK900U - 570g
SLK900A - 527g *coming soon
SLK800 - 505g
SK7 - 485g

These processors are small and sensitive. I know Zalamn tries to go for the "quiet solution", but damn. 773g! :Q

* Specified maximum weight for a cooler is 450g for the Intel Pentium 4 and the AMD Athlon 64, and 300g for the AMD Socket 462 CPU. Special care should be taken when moving a computer equipped with a cooler exceeding the weight guideline. Zalman Tech is not responsible for any damage that occurs when moving a computer.

The extra weight should be ok, though, since the HSF is bolted to the mobo rather than just clipped to the socket, right?

ja, it bolts on, but thats an enormous weight to put on a mobo IMO.. i dunno, the thing almost looks top heavy to me.. *SNAP!*

How does if perform? Is it bolted to the mobo?

Man, I wish they would have included a 4-hole bolt-down mount for P4 (socket 478). The only thing holding me back from strapping one of these on my 2.4c is the clumsy 478 mounting method. That heavy of a HS secured by the intel plastic bracket kinda scares me.

I would feel pretty secure mounting it on my IC7, if it would come with a back-plate and 4-hole mount. Oh well...maybe next revision.

dont konw about the performance ... but from toms hardware :

http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030616/hydrocool200-08.html

http://www4.tomshardware.com/howto/20030610/index.html

The best solution available right now comes from Zalman, with its skived fin design CNPS7000CU air cooler. This large cooler costs in the range of $45-55 and is ideal for overclocking.

no it doesnt bolt to the mb, as NoVo says it bolts using adapters to the plastic bracket. but i dont think its that bad, seems really sturdy to me... jsut a bitch to screw in

boy is it a thing of beauty tho

Bah, with Intels HSF mounting sytem and the P4's beautiful heat spreader im not worried about crushing anything with my 7000cu. Now on a Athlon core.....yeah....AMD time to get your act together..yeahhh.....that would be great...........

Has anyone tried the new version with a Asus Nforce 2 board? It's listed with this issue

Power Supply must not interfere with the heatsink...

Compatibility requires that no physical interference by the power supply occurs within the 55mm radius of the CPU socket's center.

Wouldn't that apply to all boards though. Very disappointing if I won't be able to use this heatsink. I've been waiting for a month for this heatsink ever since Zalman emailed me about the new version of the heatsink.

Interesting quote from Zalman's Site...

1) Compatible if there is no motherboard component higher than 15mm in height (usually capacitors) where the clip is to be located (If interference occurs, the excess portion of the clip that interferes can be cut off to make it compatible.)

2) Compatible if there are four heatsink mounting holes around the socket

3) Compatible if there is no component with a height of 39mm or higher in the 55mm radius of the center of the CPU (e.g. power supply, graphics card)

Number 2 confuses me

The four holes are the same holes that the Alpha PAL8045 and Swiftech MCX462 and many waterblocks use.

Right, but the 7000A mounts on Socket 462 boards using clips over the socket lugs, it doesn't screw onto the board.

I'm starting to think it's not worth the hassle. I may just go with the Vantec Aeroflow instead Anything else but the Volcano 9 has to be better.
