New Version of Popular Power!

Yesterday a new version of Popular Power came out. The new version can run in the background while the older version was a screensaver only client. For those who want to know, PP is a distributed client that works on real world issues. Most recently, the clients work on finding ways to optimize flu vaccines to benefit millions of people. Not only that, PP is working on contracts to *pay* people for their computing time. Head over to http://www.popularpower.com/ for the full scoop and a place to download the client.

Personally, I stopped cracking RC5 on my main machine to switch over to PP now that it can run in the background. Not that TA is uncool or anything, I just want to try out something a little more useful to ring up my electric bill with

I don't.

After all this is a distributed computing forum.

There might be TA-members interested in this kind of projects. I know some showed interest in the past. Only thing, they hold back on the client was because it was a screensaver proggie.

Peter.

I think the spam comment was in response to the fact that a thread was already posted on this topic.

But it is good to see additional TA members interested in this effort!

I don't do RC5, I'm not a member of TA, as I have a little team of my own with GF. Don't recall seeing "Team Anadtech Members Only" stamped on the Distributed Computing Forum header. Guess seeing as I'm not on the team and don't conform to your specs and have been known to test projects not affiliated solely with TA I'm not supposed to be here either. C'ya, I'm outta here if ya gotta be like that.

SilverBack, I am sorry you feeled spammed after one extra post on PP. I did not see any recent posts on PP and I firmly believe the project is a good one so I put my own thread up. Once I post something like that about 14 times you can call me a spammer. And heck, its not like putting up a few posts about the same topic is anything new.

MWalkden, does this NEED to be project TA for me to post here? I have done more than my fair share of TA stuff including assimilations so its not like I am some skeezer trying to pimp off PP. Soon PP should have up a team ranking system and all of that so there *can* be a Team Anandtech on PP. At least then would could put our computing power directly to good use instead of searching for ET (I hope someone finds something though) or cracking RC5 code. Would you rather be on the team leading a distributed search for a flu vaccine or on a team leading the search for some mystery code hidden deep within RC5

And heck, since there does not seem to be anyone interested in PP around here, that makes me the first (or one of the first) members. Anyone else want to join up? I have done 153 tasks so far, w00t!

Brian,

As far as I know there are fewer than 25 TA members that may be running Popular Power at this time. I am one of them with over 1100 units completed. As soon as PP supports teams, I plan on starting a TA team. It is good to see additional members have an interest in this project. It does show some great potential.

In case you did not know, there is a eGroup for Popular Power. It is named poppow. There are a couple hundred users signed up to received mail from there included the CEO of Popular Power, Marc Hedlund. For more information pertaining to the project, I suggest signing up for this group.

Regards,
Rob

I will steer at least one of my machines over to the Popular Power project when the "teams" function is implemented, so that we can have a Team Anandtech effort over there as well.
