For those who don't make it to the front page often

It's nice to see some serious competition for Intel and also curious to see how Intel responds. Should create very fast and cheaper drives. Let's hope!
(I understand that this is the Enterprise class drive but the SF-1200 is supposed to be close and more consumer based). Pretty awesome MLC drive kicking the SLC based drives on random....more..more..more....I want more!

I already posted a comment the main preview, but I think this looks very good. Once the consumer version is available we should start to see some more price competition in the market and overall prices should go down. Only thing to watch for is that intel doesn't release a firmware for the current G2 drives that give another big boost to writing speeds and other improvements.

Here's to 2010 and more competition in the SSD market.

Happy new years everyone

IIRC, Anand posted that Intel told him that there would simply be no more increases in the current G2 write speeds (but I could be wrong).

Pretty exciting, but what was more exciting was this:

I'm guessing we'll see 160GB down at $225, 600GB at $500+ and the 300GB drive somewhere in between.

Yay to potentially less than $2/gb Intel drives in a year.

Most I/Os are reads, so I dont think this drive at its current state will be the fastest. A lot could happen between now and then, but thats still a lot of improvement necessary.

While I agree that a 160GB Intel SSD for $225 is great...does this mean they are abandoning the 80GB and 40GB models midyear?

Picturing an 80GB @ $120 or a 40GB @ ~$75 - now that would be great for my company

yeah the 40gb intel pretty much fits withing 90% of the curve and most desktop users are not writing all day long - more doing read. i would be hard pressed to spend more than $89 on the intel V-series (aka kingston v-series) for desktops given that VDI is definitely the future (or terminal apps/services).

Why is it still SATA II?

My guess is that it doesn't need it and can't take advantage of it. The reason is that most drives have a sustained transfer rate (the speed that data actually reads off the platter/NAND) and a burst transfer rate (the speed that data can stream from the cache RAM). The controller used in the Vertex 2 Pro does not have cache RAM, thus if it was on a SATA 6Gb connection it probably would perform around the same (at just under SATA 3Gb).

where is the seagate pulsar in here?

Anand speculates that the Pulsar uses the same controller.

It looks like it would probably benefit from SATA 6GB. I mean it is pegged right at the limit of SATA 3GB.

However more than likely there simply weren't any available SATA 6GB controllers available in time.

Well with intel launching new drives by this summer, this drive should have a few months to hold the top slot if intel doesn't launch early. One of intel's SSD engineers comes into the frys I'm at in one of my regulars and he is hardset on 320gb intel drives this summer, so extrapolate from there.
