New Video Card Woes

Hey, I just picked up a refurbished x800xl from ATI as a shorterm upgrade from my 9700 on my aging computer. I have an Asus A7N8X - Deluxe revision 2 and when I install the new AGP card in the slot and hook up the molex connector, the red AGP LED goes on. And when I push the power button nothing happens. I looked in the manual and the two suggestions they give, that I'm using a 3.3V AGP card (2x, 4x) and that the card isn't seated properly don't seem to apply. I've tried pushing the card in, but it doesn't go any farther into the slot. The slot is fine, since when I put my 9700 back in the slot it booted perfectly fine (I'm typing on it now).

The only difference I can see is that the x800xl the AGP connection on the bottom looks like:

______ ___ __

and the 9700 is like:

___ __ ___ __

They both have the same sized male part that goes into the slot but the 9700 has an extra break in there.

The only other thing I could think of is that the mobo might need a new BIOS since it's been a while since I upgraded it (I'm on 1003 and the newest in 1008).

Anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? I assume this isn't just a DOA card as you can usually at least start your computer.

Can you give more information about your system (i.e. power supply, number of drives, cpu, etc.)? If your power supply is near the minimum, that could be part of the issue. The other thing that sticks out is that you're dealing with a refurb, which might be the problem.

I have a 430W Antec true power PS with an Athlon 2500+, with one hard drive (PATA), two optical drives. I'm pretty sure it isn't the PS since I've unhooked everything besides the video card, ram processor and heatsink fan and it still does the same thing. I also did a little search and the x800xl doesn't draw much more power than a 9800pro which is pretty much the same in terms of power draw as my card.

It's possible that it is the refurbished card, but usually when it isn't working the system will still start up and give some beep codes... Anyway, I'm going to update my BIOS on the off chance that it helps (might as well anyway).

Anymore help would be appreciated.

Well, I flashed the BIOS and it didn't help (although I can get the FSB quite a bit higher now!) I spoke with the Tech support for ATI and they said it sounded like a bad card, although it sounded like that was just the easiest solution for him... I'm not sure that he was that sure. I just got my RMA info so I'm sending it back.

According to ATI. this card requires an AGP 8X (0.8v), 4X (1.5V) or universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration (8X/4X). The Asus A7N8X - Delux has an AGP 3.0 compliant slot. It should work properly on your system board. Clear your Bios and set the AGP Bus timings to default. Disable any advanced settings for the AGP bus and for 8X, not auto.
