Gets close to twice the MPG of a hybrid, yet for 1/3 the cost. Price is very reasonable too ($7,900 to $14,800).

VW Up!

I actually wouldn't mind driving something like this for all the inter city travel I do (daily commute, etc.)

Because they can't use the super efficient engine that's in the Euro version

With gas prices going up, something like this would be perfect for city commuting IMHO.

For a long road trip, a bigger car might seem better, but to be honest in the city you really don't need a lot of horsepower.

Yeah I really am hoping they bring these to the states. One of the other cool things about these smart cars is because the surface area is so small, they can use better paint techniques and add better clearcoat etc..

That thing is ugly as hell.. and only 64" in width i could reach both the outsides of my car when sitting in it. And the article states that you can seat 4?!?!?! No way I could fit comfortably in that. I'll stick to my motorcycle when I want to save gas.

from our more stringent emmissions control?

That and those figures are probably not in US gallons. I'm using the smart four two as my reasoning. I have no idea what they really would be, but I'm sure they wouldn't be 94mpg, 60-70 max.

It actually looks ok, unlike that smart fourtwo they have a pic of as well. I don't consider myself obsessed with cometics...but that thing looks retarded.

It is 94 mpg, but that's for diesel fuel. Diesel engines can be more fuel efficient than regular gas ones, and are a lot more common over in Europe.

that little turd got a broken control/A arm or whatever they have up front (maybe ball joint)? Thats a nice expensive fix. At least the crappy nissan looks like it can drive away.

it's that much for a stripped version in 'emerging' markets. which means not the US. i'm guessing our price for similar kit as the base euro model will be about midway between the $8000 quoted for emerging and $14800 quoted for the base euro model, what with how euro taxes and pricing seems to work.

94 mpg in imperial is about 78 mpg US.

It would make a good second car for getting around town and commuting locally. I was just thinking about that since I bike to work usually, it would be nice to have something in between a bike and an average car that is light and gets good mileage, kind of like a golf cart on steroids for getting around locally.

The "gallon" in the UK is the Imperial Gallon, it's 20% larger than the US gallon. Correcting for that gives a US mileage rating of 78 mpg.

EDIT: Damn you ElFenix! This is what I get for not reading the entire thread.
