So I can't figure out how to get the new wd sata hd I hooked up to be recognized--either by windows or in bios.

I have the 1008 bios on the A7N8X Deluxe (rev1.04), drivers installed from Silicon Image, and drivers installed from Western Digital, but my system still doesn't see the hard drive.
The hard drive is even hot to the touch and I've checked it's power & data cable connections twice.

If anyone could help me out it'd be greatly appreciated.

sys specs:

Athlon 2600+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (1.04)
1Gb (512x2) OCZ Plat.Rev2
WD 120Gb PATA
**WD4000AAKS 400GB SATA ( https://shop1.outpost.com/product/5175466?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG )
Antec 430 True psu
Radeon 9700pro

Here's another thought. Your Asus A7N8X is probably of the same vintage as my Asus P4PE. It has an acknowledged limitation with the two SATA ports. They cannot be activated without RAID. (Asus uses Promise Fastrack.) In order for me to use a SATA drive, I had to take and create a 1 disk RAID array - of course that had to be RAID 0. Rediculous, but that's the nature of the beast. You may have to do that inorder to activate your SATA ports on that specific mobo.

I still can't get window's to recognize the drive and the SI drivers won't let me create a 1 hd RAID to try what corkyg suggested.

The WD software doesn't even recognize my HD's correctly...
My 120GB wd hd is PATA IDE (has my OS on it) and the 400Gb wd hd is SATA, but it has them mixed up, wtf?!

See if there is a jumper on the back that limits the speed. Try that.

I already put a jumper over the 5-6 pins to limit the hd to SATA 1 speed (150).

Also, when the drive is connected to my system will freeze up every 5 seconds and then go back to normal. Even while trying to install Windows on it this occurred.

Its strange. The only other thing I can think of is trying the other sata connector (SEC_SATA1 instead of PRI_SATA1).
