New Win 8.1 install craziness need advice

A few days ago I received my new MX100 SSD. I decided to do a fresh install instead of a clone. After fully upgrading to Win 8.1 with all the updates the computer started messing up. I got the "green ribbon of death" on the My PC screen and lockups, especially in Windows Media Player.
I started over again with another fresh install and the same thing.
I put the old SSD back in and it worked perfectly.
I then did a clone and the MX100 had no issues.
I would prefer to do a fresh install over a clone as I have been running this base Win 8 for some months now and I have installed and uninstalled many programs over that time.

The only thing I can think of is a Windows Update that I have yet to install on the old SSD is causing these issues.

Since I still have the old SSD sitting here with the OS still on it I am going to update this drive and see if these issues show up.

Any thoughts? Has anyone else had an issue from a recent Windows Update?

Could be the controller the port is using, could be the SATA cable. What motherboard?

Could be RAM issue as well. run memtest86+ overnight and check for any errors.

Although if it was either of those issues why would it work perfectly fine in the same SATA port and with the same memory with a cloned drive rather than the fresh install?

Also I just did a Windows update and it seems to be working fine with the cloned drive.

I am going to try one other thing. The cloned drive has an older intel rapid storage drive driver. I am going to update it and see if the OS messes up.

Installed the latest Intel drivers and still no issues with the cloned drive. I just don't get it. Everything the same except a clean install VS. a Cloned drive.

I will try another fresh install tomorrow. I still have the drive to clone if I run into this issue again.

BTW the motherboard is the Asrock Z77 extreme 4.

2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by ASMedia ASM1061, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions (SATA3_A1 connector is shared with eSATA3 port)

If you are using these ports, it is probably why you are having issues.

You had any other HHD or ssd on system at the fresh install? If yes remove all except ssd and re install.
If no did you install MB drivers from manufacturer after win installation or you updated all from MS update?

I have no idea why, but the fourth fresh install seems to be working fine.
