I set up my own network years ago, Linksys BEFSR41, with lots of help so I am no expert. Got a wireless router for my wife's laptop couple of years ago, we were always able to see each other's machines and she could get to the printer through my desktop box. Both are Windows 7

Now we had to get a new wireless, Linksys E1200. And now we dont see each other's machines any more

Hers is 192.168.0.128, gateway 192.168.0.1 which is the wireless router

Mine is 192.168.1.101, gateway 192.168.1.1 which is the basic router

Both are set to DHCP enabled

So it must be that one is on 0.1 and the other on 1.1. But I have tried changing the Properties for ipv4 at both sides, to make either

192.168.1.101
192.168.1.128

or

192.168.0.101
192.168.0.128

either way, one of them goes dead on the internet

I hesitate to diddle with the wireless router settings on my own, setting gateways and all

Can someone tell me what to do?

Chances are the last wireless device was a Wireless Access Point (WAP)

Since the E1200 is a router, you need to set it up as a WAP instead of a router. This will put everything on the same network.

here's a guide: http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

You can find many more tutorials by googling "router as wap"

another easy way is to have both machines part of your 'Homegroup' in Win 7. Then you can share your printer with other members of the homegroup.

thanks

I set both machines to join the HomeGroup but no luck. Both say "Joined" at the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Both say no one else is on the network. Still must be the 1.1 versus 0.1 thing.

The last wireless was NetGear WGT624. I dont think I ever set it up anything special, like a WAP. I have looked at the link and googled some more and I never did any of that stuff. So unless it is something that happened without any special steps, when I did the initial setup for the Netgear, I dont think it could have been a WAP.

Is it possible that this one difference matters - the Netgear was connected to a cable that ran direct from the regular router. That cable is no longer available to connect the wireless to, and so I put the new wireless in my office. So the cable from the wired router comes into my office, and then I have a hub [LinkSys EFAH05W ] that I put in long ago so I could connect my own laptop to it [that laptop was not wireless]. So I connected the new wireless to a port on that hub. And the second cable out of the hub goes to my desktop.

I expected that to work ok. And it does let my wife connect to the internet, but maybe that's why it cant see my desktop or get to the printer?

BTW the printer is usb to the desktop

I'm a little nervous to go into the router's configuration, but not nervous about changing what is connected to what

So since the wireless has 4 ports that say Ethernet on them, I figured I could run the cable from the wired router into the wireless directly, not with the hub. Then I pulled my desktop's cable from the hub and put it into one of the Internet ports on the wireless. After a short time, the desktop came back to internet connectivity and now it says its IP is 192.168.0.131.

And now --- it works! Yay and thanks a lot all of you

You basically just set it up as a WAP

The process isn't too hard, and you cabled it right! LAN to LAN

read through the ezlan link, it will help refine the config a little.

That puzzles me for sure.

ezlan site says thingsl like

* change the IP address of the Router so that it's in the same subnet as the main Router // I didnt change the address. The wired router is still *1.1 and the wireless is still *0.1

* give it an IP that doesn’t conflict with the main router's base IP address, or the DHCP server range. // I didnt change it

* Switch Off the DHCP on the Wireless Cable/DSL Router // I didnt switch off the wireless DHCP. So DHCP is still enabled in the wired AND the wireless routers

It is my guess that my desktop got its IP from DHCP on the wireless, since it was changed from 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.0.131. And it took the wireless as its default gateway, rather than the wired router as it had been doing.

Just the same, it may well be that it has become a WAP, but I didnt think anything i did sounded like anything in the ezlan website

In any case, we are happily in working mode again, she can print, and I can see her file system to move files between us instead of memory-sticking things as we have had to do for a while

thanks again to all

strange indeed. without actually being there and reviewing the setup myself, there's not much else I can say, lol.
