I just started renting a house that I was previously renting only a room of. My roommate (whom I was renting from) had a wireless router, but it was constantly plagued with problems. Often (several times a day or more), no one would be able to connect wirelessly to the router. It would try for awhile, then say "Limited" connection. From what we could tell, the router wasn't able to assign the computers IP addresses. Usually the problem would be fixed by unplugging the router, waiting a few minutes, and plugging it back in.
The day the owner moved out (and I began renting the whole house), the wireless router they left here completely died. No matter what we tried, we could not establish a connection. It wouldn't even accept connections from computers plugged directly into the modem. So I figured the setup just finally died, and went to buy a new router.
I bought a D-Link DIR-615. I got a D-Link because me and my roommate had a lot of problems with several Linksys's in a row, and he considered D-Link a good brand. It works pretty well, or at least it did for a few days. However, there are definitely some problems.
About three days after I bought the router, a week ago, a problem started occurring. About once a day or so, the world wide web will be inaccessible. If I'm signed on to AIM or something like that, the connection will still be there. I'll still be able to IM people. If I'm downloading a file, the download will continue. However, no webpages will load. It's like there's a DNS problem or something, but I'm not sure how to check specifically. I can still access the router's setup though, and if I check "save" on any page of it (without changing a setting), the web will start working again normally.
Yesterday, however, my computer fell off the network and could not reconnect. I couldn't get an IP address assigned, and could only be connected in a "Limited" way. I was only able to solve this by unplugging and replugging in the router.
The same thing has happened twice today.
What is going on? Is this completely normal with wireless routers? Do they have to be cycled on and off several times a day so the DHCP server will continue to assign computers IP addresses? (I believe that's how it works, at least. I admit that I'm not the most knowledgeable.)
Is there something I can do to fix this? Or is the router simply not working correctly, and I should take it back and exchange it?
