New XBOX 360 SKU rumor: XBOX 360 Ultimate

I've no idea if this site is in anyway credible, nor do I know where they got their info for the story. Just happened to catch this link from the avsforum, and thought it'd made for some decent discussion.

It specifically states the info was heard from a Gamestop employee, but two things debunk this for me. First, it says that it's not slated for release until next year. That's way too far out for any rumor to be considered worthwhile. Second, I can't imagine that this kind of info would be given freely to Gamestop employees, especially since it is so far out. It doesn't help employees or store managers to know this info months in advance, plus you'd know it will leak out, so it's a highly implausible scenario.

But, what do you guys think if this was to happen, or do you think it's inevitable that it appears?

IMO, no way does MS make a 360 with an HDDVD drive built in, it servers them no purpose at all. The PS3 gets the benifit of more disk space for games, by having it built in and forced on consumers.

This would be no better than the add on except it would maybe save a little space. I would be shocked if MS went this route.

Seems logical...and nice that they're giving consumers options, (if this is indeed true) but seems a little late to try to get HD-DVD players in the market like the PS3 is.

the "Elite" model is being dropped down to Premium level, leaving room for a new console at the top of the range.

I'm not sure I quite follow what they're trying to say. Are they suggesting the elite is replacing the premium?

The Elite would have to go or mostly be incorporated into the Premium, as having a fourth version of the 360 would be overkill (three is arguably overkill). The "Ultimate" would have to be no more than $450 to even be worth considering. You can nab a Premium w/HDMI and HD-DVD add-on for about $500 these days.

Although I suppose a 120GB HD-DVD 360 for $500-$550 (maybe bundle in a game) would be a nice competitor to the $600 80GB PS3 w/ Motorstorm. Still, I don't quite see how many people would be interested in an even more expensive 360.

I heard the rumor on another site where they said it would have built in HD DVD and 320 gig HDD. Now you could criticize Microsoft for having too many SKU's but all I see it as they are doing bundles for different market segments. I can see how this will fit into their new names:

Premium: Go Pro!
Elite: Go Big!
Ultimate: Go Overboard!

Yea, I kinda thought that but didn't actually research it. I believe one of the drive manufacturers just announced a drive like that, but it would be too top of the line for a 360.

I hope they introduce it and start some putting games on HD-DVD only. That way, they can increase the userbase screwjob they created by releasing the Core system to all previous consoles.

lol, that would be priceless if they did that imo. except for all the people who thought their black xbox 360 elite was the ultimate. I remember seeing an episode of Frasier where he gets a discount card for some restaurant and they ask him "I know you have a platinum card, but does your platinum frequent diner's card have diamonds in the corner? If it did you would be able to have access to a special seating section, would you like to upgrade?"

They won't do that, I highly doubt that they would even do a dual release on HD DVD and multiple DVDs.
