I pursued my Master's out of my pocket and it was a tough choice to pay 40K for it all. I really wish my company provided some reimbursement. The really painful part is that I haven't seen any benefit from getting it yet.
That is a common theme I've seen over the last few years. I personally know of 4 people who went back and got their MBAs and none of them have advanced. At least in the case of two of them, they company paid 100% of it and they were only out their time. The third guy had a portion of it paid by the company and is in like $30K of debt.
The last person paid for it out-of-pocket instead of listening to us and accepting her employer's reimbursement. Her logic was that "I don't want to have to stay there 2+ years after I get my MBA, which I would be required to do if accepted their money." Care to guess what happened to her? If you guessed "She went into $70K of debt and still works at the same company, nearly 3 years later," you win.
I won't go for a Master's unless I can get full tuition reimbursement. This company provides a yearly max of $5200, which isn't going to go far. My last company offered 100% reimbursement with no yearly caps, and I should have taken advantage of that.
But back to the topic at hand, I will probably look but I am reluctant to leave my current company. Other than the low tuition reimbursement (ironic since we're in the higher education industry), the benefits and perks are world class and can't be beat. I've thought about working on some certifications this year and then once I am fully vested in my current generous retirement plan (2013), leaving.
