Don't get me wrong, I like NY to visit but I'll never go back there to live.

i was going on my brother's feelings about San Diego vs NY.

and as a visitor to both cities my opinion is NYC>San Diego

Each has its positives and negatives. I like the culture in NY much more than San Diego and the public transportation is much better but I love the ocean and the weather in SD is sooo much nicer year round. If I want snow and skiing I can drive an hour or two to the mountains. If I want to lounge on the beach or go surfing I can drive 15 minutes to the beach.

Edit-I miss the Italian deli's & good pizza in NYC and all the great restaurants in close proximity. There's a lot of sprawl here in SD but still, I :heart: San Diego. :wine:

As an OTR driver/trainer, NY is the only city I ever had problems in that resulted in a loss. Had people climb on the truck and cause problems in Detroit, but got robbed in NY. NO, NY is not the greatest city in any respect, short of arrogance and WHINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NYC is the greatest city in the the world, however, it is too crowded and compact for my tastes to live in Manhattan.

All 15 years of my life, I've been living here in Nassau County on Long Island.

We got lighthouses, beaches, the ORIGINAL suburbia, and absolutely no chance of getting out alive if a nuke goes off.

The 4/5/6 suck, at least during rush hour. It takes me 45 minutes to get to work by train, 12 if I bike it instead.

BTW, for driving, Orlando traffic is far worse than midtown.

On the same vein, living in NYC is infinitely different from visiting it to get wasted/sightsee/whatever. As a current NYC resident (sophomore in college) and former NYC suburbanite, I can see the effects that it's taking on myself and my friends. Many of my friends, who were so enchanted with living in NYC just last year (their first) are now slowly losing the gusto they had behind it. It takes a certain kind of person to live in NY and enjoy it - a certain type of personality I think.
Anyway the entire argument of this thread is entirely based on varying perspectives. Some people appreciate cleanliness more than nightlife - some people appreciate diversity more than tourist destinations - things like that.

Also for the above poster, the three Gray's Papayas are not related to Papaya King, which I consider to be an evil hellspawn bent on using the term "Papaya" to gain market share. But hey, that's just my biased opinion.

I grew up in the Midwest, so I really appreciate the suburban lifestyle--2000 sq ft houses on nice lots, sizable apartments, reasonable traffic volumes, open spaces, clean air, low cost of living.

I really don't know how you New York City people do it. Do you have to be rich in order to be able to justify living in the New York City area? I wonder how people in low-paid occupations like teaching make it. I mean, you can work as a teacher just about anywhere in the US, so why not move away from New York City and essentially double your standard of living merely by cutting your cost of living by 2/3?

That having been said, I'll relocate to New York City--just as soon as I can find a job in my field that offers me $100,000+/year (which I figure is the equivalent of $50,000/year just about anyplace else outside of California and the insane Washington DC area).

I don't mind tourists for the most part, the ones that would visit New Orleans when I lived there were many, many times worse.

The one thing that bugs me is people who don't know how to walk on busy sidewalks. NYC residents are just as guilty as this as tourists. Walking 3 or more side by side on a busy sidewalk, walking out of a storefront and just standing there, not walking straight down the sidewalk, stopping suddenly in the middle of the sidewalk....argh.
