im spending a few days in new york coming from england and i want to pick up a mobo +cpu +memory can anyone advise of a good store?

My advice:
don't

8.25% tax here, lots of con camera places, and the only real places for hardware are Compusa, Best Buy(and only in Queens), and Circuit City(queens has 2)

theres a compusa on 5th avenue in the 30's, but I suggest buying everything online.

thanks for advice but even with 8.5 % sales tax your prices are at least 20% less than the uk. anyway i will check out stores you mentioned

I'm not sure where you'll be in nyc, but there are some places where you'll get some descent prices. I've been to stores in Queens where you'll get computer hardware for a descent value and not have to pay the 8.25% tax. They sell brand name hardware as well as generic brands. If you know what you're looking for then, you can get a great deal. They're ususally cheaper than bestbbuy & compusa stores.

These stores are mostly owned by chinese ppl and if you pay in cash then "tax is included." I'm pretty sure there are stores like this in manhattan, but you'll have to check the yellow pages.

J and R might also be a decent place to look.

J&R has recently improved their parts section. I picked up an Antec 400W PS for a very reasonable price last fall.

It's also a *fun* store to wander around.

If you can travel to Queens, a bourogh of NYC, or maybe Newark, then there is another alternative. There are computer shows or flea markerts.

If you take KKCC's advice, look up "MSL Computers" at the show, I've been dealing with them steadily over the past year and they are very honest.

BTW, I'm with you, dreadogg. Since the bombing my online purchases have plummeted. I've been spending much more $$ at J&R and the local shops. As I've noted in other threads, J&R took terrible losses after 9/11 (retail store had to be closed for 2 months), but they didn't lay off anyone and even paid salaries. I have no problem paying a bit more to support that kind of retail business.

Actually right across the river in Jersey City we only have a 3% sales tax, and we have most computer stores you need. There is a staples right by the Newport PATH Station, and most other stores are located on Rt. 440.

Here's some help:


Go to a store named "PCI" in manhatten, on or around 34th street and 6th ave. You can ask information for the exact address,

When you get there, tell them 'Johnny" rererred you to them and he said you can get some good deals on computer components there.


Ihave some personal friends there and they will hook you up if you need anything. Also, if you pay them cash, they won't charge you tax.

uh, semantics perhaps, but those planes were meant to be and used as flying bombs and for those of us who saw it from the east side the 2nd explosion surely looked like a bomb.
