Newbie at routers. Help needed...

Hi everyone, I decided to buy the Asus Router (WL520GC) in the other thread I made not too long ago, but I'm having trouble with the firmware. I've set up everything to be similar/the same as my old Linksys router and I can get a wired connection/wireless connection, but when I look in the "Status" section of the router GUI, it says that I am disconnected. The internet does not work on either wired/wireless also.

Any ideas? I'm currently using my old router right now but I'd like to have the new one set up quickly cause this one is crapping out on me I think (unstable/slow connections)

when you plugged your asus router into your modem, did you reboot the modem?

^is that required?...I change routers all the time through the same modem and never have to reboot the modem for the routers to connect properly. Or I'm guessin' your asking him that to see if the modem may itself went back to the default, and stopped bridging? rite?

I did not reset the modem, but I may try it. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

lol...I was asking him as well as you are... resetting the modem only restores it back to default, from there I would start configging the network to see if the problem persists. Default everything again and start over.

The problem should be that you need to reset your Cable or DSL modem. That will clear the mac-address table otherwise you will have to wait for the mac-address table to update...which depending on the modem settings could be a while.

When you plug in everything you get your IP addresses correct? It just doesn't connect to the internet?

Hmm as far as I know, the modem has been reset and it's not working. As I've said before, in Windows, the icon on the bottom right says we are connected (100 mbps for wired, 54 mpbs for wireless) but we cannot connect to the internet. Can't think of anything else.

My old Linksys router was set up for me so I really don't have too much of an idea of what I'm doing.

i said to reboot the modem (power cycle) it. Anytime i change the router that connected to my cable modem. I have to reboot it so that it will pick up mac address for the new router that connected to the modem.

might be the difference, because I've never done that.

And rather is XP or Vista or 7, I would still run the automatic 'Connect To A Network' in Network & Sharing Center (different in XP, slightly). I know if my PC is connected physically to the router, I get the first pop up windows stating I have LAN connection. A second pops up to show me a icon called 'Internet Connection'. (<---with XP BTW) may be different in your case, but just a thought.

of pressing buttons and plugging cable without understanding why.

First you have to find out how your Internet connection is authenticated. (PW/ID).

I just set up the new router. As you guys said, apparently I needed to reset the modem. I now have a stable internet connection that's 2-3 times faster than befor according to speedtest.

I have always had to rest modem too, i believe this is due to the mac address as sonoma1993 said.
