Newbie help on Linux

Ok I want to break out from windoze and try Linux. What are some good sites to look at for info. Who has the best release? Right now I have a copy of pogolinux(Caldera 2.4), when I try io install it thru windows it wont recognize my mouse. I f I try install from cd boot it doesnt see my HD. I have a 10 gig partition waiting for it. It is connected to an ATA 100 controller card not on the IDE chanels. anyway any help would be appreciated.

Also search the forums... there are lots of stuff posted for Linux newbies here... there are a ton of people here that use Linux and help people out.

If your hard drive is connected to an ATA-100 controller, you'll want to try either Mandrake 8.0 or Redhat 7.1 for a headacheless installation. They should detect the controller and your harddrive, plus they have USB conenctivity out of the box. If you don't have the bandwidth to download them, i think you can buy them really cheap from www.cheapbytes.com. Mandrake is definatly the easiest distro to use and comes with pretty much all the apps you'll ever need. Make sure you've got a decent size hard drive cuz drake's a disk hog.

I wouldn't recommend installing Linux on the same HD as Windows. Admittedly I am a novice with Linux Myself but I have been burnt too many times when dual booting on the same HD to do it again. If you have an extra HD that would be the way to go IMHO. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the replys.. Thats 2 votes for mandrake now. as for the single drive. I hope I can put it on the same drive otherwise I'll have to redo the whole shebang. I have a second 2 gig but when u put it in then all the other drive letters move up and that screws up way too much stuff. So i think It'll have to be on the f partition of my single drive.

Don't worry about what he said... its really no problem.. he just WHIMPED OUT and took the easy way rather than figuring out how to do it right.

There are SOOOO many articles on the Net out there now there is no excuse for someone who has just a little computer experience not being able to do a Linux install and create a dual boot system.

So don't sweat it...

And you need to use Mandrake 8 or RedHat 7.1 if you are on ATA100... and FYI THAT SOFTWARE BASED FAKE HARDWARE ATA/100 RAID BULLCRAP does not work in Linux...so if your doing it...stop.
