Newbie i7 920 OC: What are the best temps?

I'm pretty new to OC'ing and I don't want to burn up my really nice new processor.

Here's what I'm getting:
-i7 920
-Asus P6T
-3GB Corsair Dominator
-Noctua NH-U12P SE 1366 Ultra

Once it's built I'll follow some of the great advice here on how to OC it. However, I don't know what temps to look for.

What are temps I should try to avoid? Or that I should expect?
Also, is the memory I picked good for OC'ing?

Thanks!

EDIT: Upgraded!

Well, I have the 920 on an EVGA mobo with a coolermaster V8, and it idles around 40 and hits 62-63 when running 4 instances of orthos, this is at stock. Haven't pushed it yet. Still trying to figure out how to set the memory divider since I'm only running 1066 RAM

Numerous users are reporting ddr3 slot A2 magically will die and work.

Meaning if you have DDR3 and 3 sticks, the middle slot WONT Register in bios or Windows.

It registers in CPU-Z tho.

Stupid CRAPSUS.

And i know someone is gonna pop in and say R2E... Well the R2E even has the same problems.

as i said its completely random.

One day you'll see all 3gb, next day, poof, 1 will disappear.

Ive about given up on the board, and im waiting for my giggy X58 to arrive. Once that comes out, this board is going out for a RMA, and im never touching CRAPSUS again.

I had issues on there P5Q-Dlx even....

*sigh*

Stupid OCPalm.

Sounds like bios issues but my hearing isn't that great these days. I like the 775 mounting holes on the P6T, although I heard there is one more 1366 board that supports 775 mounting holes... anyone know which it is?

P6T does not have lga775 holes.

LGA1366 looks like lga775 only spaced out futher.

The board which has both is foxconn bloodrage.

EDIT: i was wrong, the regular P6T does indeed have LGA775 holes.

giggy > ASUS > DFI i agree with you.

Im really hating both my ASUS boards right now.
The P5Q-DLX and the P6T-DLX.

I tell you, the manufacturers read those comments at new egg because that's probably where most of their sales are and commenting on Asus' product quality control might get them back on their feet again. I agree, my Maximus II board is worse than the 100$ less Gigabyte UD3 series boards. Everywhere I read, I see more and more bad comments about Asus. I guess my P5Q premium is a diamond in the ruff.

Do they work stock though?

No P6T6 WS Revolution? I have two getting ready to hang on the wall. It arrived safe. The box with ram and cpus (965) arrived wet. Very very wet mind you and while the CPUs may be still good the broker wants them back and said there may not be a replacement for a month. I get TWO of everything for this very reason and BOTH are affected. glub

What's the sense in running an o/c if you're not stable stock?

80C on full load.

Keep below 80C if possible

70C is ideal

60C and your a cooling expert

Sub 50C and your a god in cooling.

cooling questions really need to go in my sub section.

Oops. I missed the subsection. Sorry.

So, 70C under 100% is is ideal. But under 80C is ok. I won't hurt my baby if I have it in the 70's or close to 80C, will I?

How about idle temperature? What should my goal be?

Just got the chip and mobo - this is gonna be sweet!!

idle doesnt do much..

lol.. only tells you if you got your mount on, however its very unreliable.

Because even the slightest change in ambients, or a faster moving cpu fan can change your idle drastically.

You look at load more then idle, because load is the max heat output your comp can achieve.

I must have gotten lucky with my P6T as I have not had any memory issues whatsoever with mine. It has been rock-solid.

In regards to the temps, I agree with aigomorla to try and keep the temps in the 70's. My 3.6 oveclock doesn't get over 70C and that is where I prefer to keep the temps. The 9700 Zalman should do a pretty good job in cooling it, but you be in the mid-70's or close to 80C on a mid to high OC (depending on your CPU and needed voltage).

i7s run hot, so be prepared for it.

I've scrapped the Zalman to get the Noctua NH-U12P SE 1366 Ultra.

You're setup is somewhat similar to the one I'm building. Here's what I'll have:

i7 920
Asus P6T - not deluxe
3GB Corsair Dominators
1x Velociraptor 150GB
1x Seagate 640GB
Geforce 7600GT
500 PSU - may need to replace... ran out of money.

Have you got the i7 92 yet? If not, try and get the D0 revision. (not a plug) I know Tankguys has a pre-order on the D0, but I am not sure of the release day where it will actually be available.

Good build.

yeah i love tank guys when it comes to the EXACT chip you want.

You can even call them and ask them directly for a stepping, and they try to make all customers happy.

Definitely two thumbs up.
