Always wanted to try paintballin, just never really did it, but some friends of mine decided they are gonna go in a few weeks, sooo.....What gun would you reccomend for a newbie? I am thinking something <$150 w/ shipping, Semi-Auto, Easy dissassemble. I was think the JT spectra proteus or the ice version. Do I need any pads? What about loader, CO2 etc?

no, don't waste money on pads.
while you are at it, do not get a mask either
paintball is much more fun without either

I played with no pads, you just have neat circular bruises for a few days. A face mask is essential though, as I'm sure you know.

Get a mask..I hope that guy was joking.

As for a gun, a Spyder is a good starter gun that you can put some upgrades into over time.

Masks are essential. Plus no fields will ever let you in without one. At my local place, if you get caught with your face shield up, even for a second to look around, your perma banned from the place. Paintballs in the eyes can kill, plus hits to the other parts of your face HURT A LOT MORE than it would hurt to get hit in the leg.

I hope that was a crappy attempt at sarcasm.

Anyways, you should look for a spyder compact, it's a good starter gun, with the double trigger, etc. The vertical setup is alright, but if you like bottomline (tank mounted like a stock), it's more expensive. The JT Proteus is an ok mask, at 40 bucks. You do need a loader, also known as a hopper, which runs around 5 bucks. You also need a CO2 tank, which is around 15-30 bucks, depending on size (9, 12, 16, 20 oz). For a vertical gun, a 9 or 12 works nice, 20 is too damn big to be lugging around, but with a bigger tank, you dont have to refill as often. You're better off lookin for a package, since you don't got all the s3it already. You also forgot paint, which runs around 15 bucks for 400 (Zap, Proball at Sports Authority), to 50-80 bucks for a 2000 round case of paint.

Yes it get's very expensive, which is why I had to quit playing until I'm out of school. I'm going to have to also recommend one of the Spyder series.

try www.888paintball.com for a combo on a spyder one... make sure it has bottom line, they probably have a combo with a hopper, elbow, mask and tank for 200.00 or soemthing like that...derr or you could pm me, or drop me a email, I've got a tricked out spyder tl that I would let go for 150.

I can't really reccomend spyders, they're cheap, but it takes some upgrading to get them to the level of a Tippmann Model 98. The m98 on the other hand, only really needs a barrel upgrade. After that, you might as well start saving for a higher end gun. The trouble with spyders is people spend a lot of money upgrading them, only to try and trade them later for a higher end gun (which no one wants to do). The tippmann has a nice fast trigger and is easily cleaned. Lots of fields use them as rental guns, which is a testiment to their durability. I've always said I could back my truck over my tippmann and still play with it.

If you're not planning on upgrading past your first gun, a spyder is fine. You don't need pads (might want a cup though), in fact, you'll get laughed at if you go to a regular field looking like a motocross rider. For a mask, the Spectra series is good, I like the Flex7 myself.

Don't. Buy an airsoft gun. Insanely cheaper in the long run, and completely realistic guns.

the model 98 is a big gun that gets in the way, it's worthless if your playing indoor paintball or in tight quarters. Once you put a tank on the back of it, and a barrel the thing is like 3 feet long. Also, I've owned both and from experience the trigger pull on the spyders and the trigger pull on the 98's are very similar. There are also very few mods that can be done to a modle 98, say if one was to keep their spyder and put a hyperframe on it, there is a fully automatic gun there.

yes, and I have seen many fields use a spyder one or a spyder compact, thus showing their durability... right???

imo, don't ever waste money on a marker that is going to turn you into a even bigger target and get in the way half the time.

edit: call me a pansy if you must but airsoft hurts too much

<< Airsoft? Don't those just shoot little toy plastic pellets? Paintball is so much better. >>

Lol...don't comment on something you have no knowledge about, or at least very little. Go to places like this, and tell me they are little toy pellets. Exact replicas of real guns, some shooting 20 shots PER SECOND, or electrics at 800-900 per minute, with the gas guns having realistic actions...

They are also used in movies, BTW...(They were in the Matrix)..

Wow thanks for all the replies and answers, a few more I've come up w/ while reading the posts:

Difference between vertical and bottomline setup?

What size Co2 should I get? Any differences besides one holds more?

Theres a lot of reccomondations on brands here, but do you guys got any recs on a specific model? I checked out the M98 which doesn't seem to bad, seems like a downside is that its hard to take apart and clean in the field? Any truth to that?

What are the best/cheapest sites to purchase all this from?

best place online is www.paintballgear.com or www.888paintball.com

the vertical tank setup is where the tank screws into the gun vertically, usually in front of the trigger doubling as a grip, this is a poor mix for balance with the gun though and most players don't use this way. bottom line is where the tank screws in to an adapter usually mounted to the bottom of the trigger/grip assembly, keeps the tank out of the way and adds weight to the back of the gun to balance everything out a little bit better.

the model 98 isn't so bad to feild strip. normally you wouldn't do this during a game so the time that it takes to do it really isn't that important. (if wondering about a ball break while playing a squeegy is used to clean the barrel, chamber, powerfeed and bolt. maybe you already knew this?)
imo the spyders are definatly easier to strip down and clean, I know on the rear cocking models it's one pin and the valve and bolt all come out, they are simple to take apart and put back together.

for the size of a co2 tank I would get an aluminum 12oz or a 16oz, the 16 oz version that is the short fat tank that looks like a football, around 22 bucks at www.paintballgear.com

i have a great package i could sell you if you wanted.

Point zero paintball gun, rear cocking, real velocity adjustment, has some plastic but really good gun.

your choice of 4oz or 12oz co2. (4oz is great, cuz i have it set up for vertical bottle, but obviously you get 3x the shots out of 2x.

I have a graphite flex7 ize mask. really nice mask, still goes for like 50 bucks or more. comes with perfect clear lens.

viewloader hopper, half white/clear, half blue.

hmmm..thats basically all you need, would include barrel plug and squeegie and stuff, and could send it all to you for like 125 shipped.

email me @ Mossman11@rcn.com

i could substitute other stuff in for you, just send me an email, we can chat, my PM bin is overly full right now, and im too tired to clear it.
