Problem. 2 Computers, 1 hub and 1 cablemodem.
Question. How do I connect these 2 comps so I can use net on both of them?
Is there some kind of FAQ?

set up a lan between your two computers, hook up the cable modem to one of them, then set up some internet sharing software.

you should be able to search through this forum and find quite a few answers.

I don't know why you say its harder, I've done it both ways and they are basically the same deal, one just costs you extra money because you have to have a second ip address from the isp.

Well, maybe not harder, but it was a pain for me to get WinProxy working (I never even tried Internet Connection Sharing). Besides, one PC is a webserver, and I didn't want to run my gaming machine through a proxy

bigjohn, you knuckle head! Plugging the cable modem straight into the hub is what makes all those broadcasts go out onto the subnet, which my firewall denies and dutifully logs. I had an 80MB logfile about a month ago because someone else did that on the same subnet as me! Seriously, though, this is also bad because it would be cake for anyone on the same network as you to pick up every single packet you send out. All they would have to do is set up a packet sniffer and wait for something good...

If you're talking to any computer outside your LAN, someone can sniff your packets as they pass by anyway. But as I understood it, Jani just wants to be able to be able to use the Net on both computers. So he wouldn't be transmitting packets between his two computers. Wouldn't it be OK then in his case, or am I missing something? :Q

I agree that I should be using a proxy with my setup since I occasionally copy files across my LAN, but that's still a few projects away...

You're right about people being able to capture the packets anyway. I figured out that it is the NetBIOS broadcasts I was receiving when my logs filled. At first, I thought someone was trying to invade my system using somesort of NetBIOS attack method, and it also made me mad cuz I kept running out of disk space on that partition! I finally wised up and reset my firewall rules not to log broadcasts. Logs have stayed around 2MB now, and I'm flyin' free!

ComputerNewbie, yes you can have quite a few computers on one cable or dsl connection. some companies tell you if you want more, then you will have to pay for more ip's, you can get around this, ***disclaimer*** it is against their rules, so if they found out they could disconnect you.

the things is though, if you just have 2 or 3 comps doing normal surfing, the company will not take any notice. if you hooked up an entire apartment complex, they might start to wonder how any 1 person could do that much surfing
