newbie questions: can i use a router to split one ip?

i recently got cable modem installed. i only got 1 ip address with the service and they said it costs $5 more per ip and then i have to buy a hub from them too. but i was wondering if it was possible to buy a router inorder to split the one ip for multiple computers. any answer would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Look into the Linksys Cable/DSL router. The way it works is your router will get the "real" global IP from your ISP and it will assign local only IPs to your computers. The computers would connect to the internet through NAT (look it up, lots of info about it out there). It works pretty good and you only need one IP. The Linksys is also very easy to configure if you RTFM.

You can't split an IP as such, but as Rainsford says, using an NAT device to share the connection comes pretty close.

Any cable modem router should work to use the cable modem with more than one computer. Just plug the router into the cable modem and each computer into the router.
