Newbie w/ LAN config questions

Ok, let's try this again. Freakin wormy dial-up... *sigh*

I've got a small gaming LAN going & recently a couple of us recently upgraded to WinXP Pro from Win98SE. Under W98 we had all the network settings tweaked similar to what the to the Techspot/3dSpotlight guide here suggests.

My question is how much network/nic tweaking is required under XP to make it the happiest networking with W98? Anyone have a XP Lan tweaking guide?

2nd question is We're doing some large movie/music file transferring(4gig or so in one large directory) & when we moved everything from a XP machine to the W98 server it took 15-20min, but when transferring everything back from server to the xp machine it took an entire evening. Is that normal? Is that just a configuration problem or strictly a 98 to XP communication problem? Using a 3com 12port Linkbuilder 10/100 hub & linksys, realtek, & d-link nics.

Any advice to make things smoother between the OS's would be really appreciated.

Answer 1. While Win98 by default loaded few protocols, Win XP loads only TCP/IP. The sp called tweaks that you linked are mainly instruction to remove the additional protocol, it for no use for Win XP.

Answer 2. The problem that you experience with transfer between Win98 to XP is a fluke that can happen. Make sure that any software firewall is disabled on XP, and make sure that the two computers by default use NetBIOS over TCP/IP transfer. You probably will not see it if the two computers will use XP.

I've also got IPX/SPX installed on my systems since I was told that Half-Life (and related mods) used it. Do think I had Netbios disabled on the Win98 machine although I did have file & printer sharing enabled.

I'll give it another go sometime once I get netbios turned back on.

Any other suggestions that'll make life smoother?
